National Rail timetable CHANGES - December 2008 to May 2009

The National Rail timetable is reviewed twice a year, in December and May. The latest edition takes effect from Sunday 14th December 2008 until Saturday 16th May 2009, and contains a number of significant changes to the services and routes operated by the Train Operating Companies. 

A summary of the changes for each Train Operating Company is given in the table below. The Journey Planner contains timetables for up to 12 weeks in advance and reflects these changes.

 

Arriva Trains Wales

  • A new direct service will run between Aberystwyth and Birmingham International
  • A new direct service will run between Holyhead and Birmingham International.
  • There are increased services between Cardiff Central and Manchester Piccadilly
  • Faster services will be running between Swansea and Milford Haven / Pembroke Dock.

c2c

There are no significant changes to C2C services during this period.

Chiltern Railways

A new station at Aylesbury Vale Parkway, to the north of Aylesbury, is expected to open during late 2008 / early 2009. This will extend current Chiltern Railways services to and from London Marylebone via Amersham.

CrossCountry

Services between Reading and Brighton via Kensington Olympia and Gatwick Airport have been withdrawn.

East Midlands Trains

 

 

London services

  • A new direct service will run between London St Pancras and Lincoln via Nottingham.
  • A new direct service will run between London St Pancras and the new station at Corby, which is due to open during this period.
  • A new station is due to open at East Midlands Parkway (for East Midlands Airport) during this period.
  • Some services have been retimed to provide better connection times to Eurostar services at London St Pancras.
  • Later services will run to and from Nottingham and Leicester.
  • Direct services between Barnsley and London St Pancras, and also between Burton-on-Trent and London St Pancras have been withdrawn.

Local Services

  • Services to and from Matlock have been extended to start from and end at Nottingham instead of Derby.
  • Later services will run to and from Nottingham and Leicester.
  • Services between Nottingham and Mansfield will now run on Sundays (the Robin Hood Line).
  • Services between Boston and Grantham have been increased to provide more connections with National Express East Coast services to London and Scotland.
  • East Midlands Trains services at Langley Mill and Alfreton will be reduced, but Northern Rail are introducing a new service between Nottingham, Chesterfield, Sheffield and Leeds which will call at Langley Mill and Alfreton.
  • Services to and from Cambridge have been withdrawn. National Express East Anglia will take over the running of these services.
  • Burton-on-Trent and Willington stations will continue to be run by East Midlands Trains, but will only now be served by CrossCountry services.

Eurostar

There are no significant changes to Eurostar services during this period.

First Capital Connect

Thameslink route

  • Major engineering work is taking place throughout this timetable period, meaning that there are no cross-London services (between London St Pancras and London Bridge) every night between 2230 & 0430, and all day at weekends.
  • From March 2009, services between Bedford / Luton and Barbican / Moorgate will be withdrawn.
  • From March 2009, a new joint service between First Capital Connect and Southeastern will run between Kentish Town, central London and Sevenoaks (and some other locations in Kent / South East England during peak hours).

Great Northern route

There are no significant changes to First Capital Connect Great Northern services (to / from London Kings Cross and Moorgate) during this period. However, customers should be aware that with the withdrawal of Thameslink route services at Moorgate, it will no longer be possible to connect between Thameslink and Great Northern routes at Moorgate from March 2009.

First Great Western

There are no significant changes to First Great Western services during this period.

First ScotRail

  • Services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen will be retimed to provide better connections to Perth and Dundee.
  • Additional services will run between Aberdeen and Inverurie.
  • An additional service will run between Inverness and Wick.

First TransPennine Express

Most services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport will now be non-stop services. Northern Rail will be providing additional services for intermediate stations.

Services between Manchester Piccadilly and Glasgow / Edinburgh will no longer call at Salford Crescent. Northern Rail services between Manchester Piccadilly and Preston will call at Salford Crescent in place of the First TransPennine Express service.

Gatwick Express

Some services will be extended to run between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton during the morning and evening peak hours.

Grand Central

There are no significant changes to Grand Central services during this period.

Heathrow Connect

There are no significant changes to Heathrow Express services during this period.

Heathrow Express

There are no significant changes to Heathrow Express services during this period.

Hull Trains

There are no significant changes to Hull Trains services during this period.

Island Line

There are no significant changes to Island Line services during this period.

London Midland

Following completion of major engineering work on the West Coast Main Line, there are changes to many London Midland services to work with the new timetable being introduced by Virgin Trains.

  • A new direct service will run between London Euston and Crewe via the Trent Valley.
  • A new direct service will run between London Euston and Birmingham New Street via Northampton. This also increases the number of services running between Northampton and Birmingham New Street.
  • More services will run between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham, with faster journey times
  • A new service will run between Worcester and Gloucester.
  • Services between Walsall and Wolverhampton have been withdrawn (services between Walsall and Birmingham New Street will now run to/from Wolverhampton instead of Birmingham International / Coventry).
  • An increased service level to & from Atherstone.
  • Services resumed to & from Stone.

London Overground

There are no significant changes to London Overground services during this period.

Merseyrail

There are no significant changes to Merseyrail services during this period.

National Express East Anglia

More services will run to and from Cambridge, replacing those previously run by East Midlands Trains.

National Express East Coast

There are no significant changes to National Express East Coast services during this period.

Northern Rail

Following completion of major engineering work on the West Coast Main Line, there are changes to Northern Rail services at Crewe and Chester to work with the new timetable being introduced by Virgin Trains

  • Services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport will now call at all stations, replacing the First TransPennine Express services.
  • Services between Manchester Piccadilly and Macclesfield will now run to and from Stoke-on-Trent.
  • A new service will run between Leeds and Nottingham via Barnsley, Sheffield and Chesterfield.
  • More services will run between Leeds and Manchester Victoria via Bradford Interchange.
  • Services between Leeds and Hebden Bridge via Brighouse will now run to and from Manchester Victoria.
  • Direct services between Buxton and Blackpool North have been withdrawn, and a change of trains is now required at Manchester Piccadilly.

South West Trains

There are no significant changes to South West Trains services during this period.

Southeastern

  • A new service operated jointly between Southeastern and First Capital Connect will run from 2nd March 2009 between Kentish Town, London St Pancras & Sevenoaks (and some other locations in Kent during peak hours).
  • Southeastern services between Tonbridge and Redhill will be withdrawn, with Southern taking over the running of services and the intermediate stations.

Southern

  • Services between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will be increased during peak hours (partly with the extended running of Gatwick Express services).
  • A new service will run between Tonbridge and Redhill, replacing the previous Southeastern service. This includes taking over the running of Leigh, Penshurst, Edenbridge, Godstone and Nutfield stations.
  • Improved journey times on services between London and Chichester via Horsham.
  • A new service will run between Milton Keynes Central and East Croydon via Clapham Junction (starting January 2009).
  • Services between Brighton and Watford Junction via Clapham Junction have been withdrawn.

Stansted Express

There are no significant changes to Stansted Express services during this period.

Virgin Trains

Following completion of major engineering work on the West Coast Main Line, there are changes to most routes in the Virgin Trains timetable. Services on most routes will be faster, and have an increased number of services

  • A new direct service will run between Wrexham General and London Euston.

Wrexham & Shropshire

There are no significant changes to the level of service run by Wrexham & Shropshire, but journey times between Wrexham and London Marylebone will be reduced by approximately 30 minutes during this period.
