Changes to the National Rail Timetable from Sunday 13 December 2009

The National Rail Winter Timetable comes into effect on Sunday 13 December 2009, and is valid until May 2010.

The table below gives a summary of the changes each Train Operating Company is making. These changes are reflected in the Journey Planner.

Table of changes by Train Operating Company

Arriva Trains Wales

No significant timetable changes are expected to Arriva Trains Wales services.

c2c

No significant timetable changes are expected to c2c services.

Chiltern Railways

Chiltern Railways services between London Marylebone and Stratford-upon-Avon will be reduced to one per day (from Stratford in the morning, returning from London in the evening). A new service between Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon will be introduced to provide connections to / from London services.

Some Wrexham & Shropshire services will be calling at Bicester and Banbury to provide extra services for Chiltern Railways customers travelling to and from London Marylebone

CrossCountry

Some additional CrossCountry services will be introduced between Cardiff and Bristol, and there will be an additional late night service between Stansted Airport and Cambridge.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other CrossCountry services.

East Coast

No significant changes are expected to East Coast services.

East Midlands Trains

East Midlands Trains services between Sheffield and London St Pancras are expected to be increased to half-hourly during the new timetable period.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other East Midlands Trains services.

Eurostar

No significant timetable changes are expected to Eurostar services.

First Capital Connect

There will be some changes to evening and late-night First Capital Connect services from London Kings Cross, with some services calling at additional stations.

Cross-London 'Thameslink' services will continue to be subject to alterations at weekends because of engineering work.

First Great Western

There will be some changes to the types of train used on some morning and evening peak time services between London Paddington and Didcot / Oxford / Worcester.

Additional services will run or call at stations between Exeter and Plymouth / Paignton to replace South West Trains services.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other First Great Western services.

First Hull Trains

There are changes to the times of some weekend services. Also, the 10:12 Hull - London Kings Cross service on Sundays will run via (and call at) Goole, and not via Selby.

No significant timetable changes are expected to First Hull Trains weekday services.

First TransPennine Express

First TransPennine Express will run two additional daily services will run between Manchester Airport and Glasgow / Edinburgh.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other First TransPennine Express services.

Grand Central

No timetable changes are expected to Grand Central services

Heathrow Connect No timetable changes are expected to Heathrow Connect services
Heathrow Express No timetable changes are expected to Heathrow Express services
Island Line No timetable changes are expected to Island Line services 
London Midland

There will be some additional morning and evening peak time services between Milton Keynes / Bletchley / Watford Junction and London Euston.

There will be some changes to the types of train used on some morning and evening peak time services on some other London Midland routes.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other London Midland services.

London Overground

No significant timetable changes are expected to London Overground services.

Merseyrail

No significant timetable changes are expected to Merseyrail services.

National Express East Anglia / Stansted Express

There will be some changes to the types of train used on some National Express East Anglia services, with more carriages being available.

There will be an increase in National Express East Anglia services between London Liverpool Street and Chingford / Hertford East on Sundays, particularly during the evening.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other National Express East Anglia or Stansted Express services.

Northern Rail

Northern Rail services between Hull and Scarborough will be increased on weekday afternoons, and also on Sundays. There will also be increased Sunday services between Hull and York.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other Northern Rail services.

ScotRail

A new hourly limited-stop service will run between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts, and also a new half-hourly service between Glasgow and Kilmarnock

Some additional early morning services will be running to Glasgow Central from Dumfries, Ayr, Gourock and Neilston.

No significant timetable changes are expected to other ScotRail services. 

South West Trains

South West Trains services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids will be increased, but their services will no longer run between Exeter and Plymouth / Paignton. First Great Western will provide additional services for connections between Exeter and Plymouth / Paignton. Seat reservations will no longer be available on services between London Waterloo and Exeter.

There are no other significant changes to South West Trains services on any other routes.

Southeastern

An entirely new timetable is introduced on Southeastern. All train times will change

Southeastern Highspeed services will begin, running between stations in Kent and London St Pancras, including stops at Ebbsfleet International and the new Stratford International station.

Amongst the other changes to Southeastern services:

  • A new service will be introduced between London Cannon Street and Orpington via Lewisham.
  • Services between Strood and Paddock Wood will be extended to start from and terminate at Tonbridge.
  • Increased service levels between Tunbridge Wells and London
  • London Cannon Street to Plumstead services via Woolwich are being withdrawn, as an additional service will is being introduced to run between London Charing Cross and Gillingham via Woolwich
Southern / Gatwick Express

There are significant changes to Southern services with this timetable.

Amongst the changes to services:

  • Southern will no longer call at London Charing Cross or Waterloo East. Southeastern will be increasing the number of their services calling at these stations
  • Eastly morning services to Ashford International will be retimed to provide connections with Southeastern Highspeed services. Some other services to Hastings will also be retimed to provide connections with Southeastern services to London Charing Cross.
  • Most services between East Croydon and Milton Keynes will now call at the recently opened Imperial Wharf station.
  • There will be an increase in Southern services calling at Norwood Junction and Merstham (for services to/from London Bridge)

No significant timetable changes are expected to Gatwick Express services. 

Virgin Trains

No significant timetable changes are expected to Virgin Trains services.
