Fares announcement

The UK Government announced on Tuesday 29 November that regulated fares (covering almost half of all fares) will rise in January by an average of the retail price index (RPI) for inflation plus one per cent. This is lower than the increase of RPI plus three per cent that the Government had originally planned for 2012.

During the Autumn, train companies had already set millions of new fares reflecting the original, higher increase. Trains companies have been working hard to re-price fares in line with the Government announcement.

As a result, information on prices for train travel from Monday 2 January will now be available from Tuesday 20 December, a few weeks later than would normally be the case.

Until 20 December, information on fares will be at 2011 prices, except for Advance tickets where the 2012 price is already available. From 20 December, all websites will have the correct 2012 prices. Ticket offices and self-service machines will have the new prices set as soon as possible after this date - please check with your train company.

Tickets already purchased for 2012 will be still be valid for travel

For customers wanting to buy a ticket now for travel on or after Monday 2 January, the following will apply until Tuesday 20 December:

Walk up tickets (Anytime / Off-peak / Super Off-peak)

Tickets booked for travel on or after 2 January 2012 will be available at 2011 prices.

Advance tickets

These are unaffected and can be bought for travel either before or after 2 January 2012.

Season Tickets

These are normally available seven days in advance and so could not be bought for 2012 before 20 December under normal circumstances. National Rail Enquiries will continue to quote 2011 prices for Season tickets until the correct prices are available from 20 December.

All prices for travel in 2011 are unaffected. The UK government announcement applies only to England. Rail is a devolved power in Scotland and Wales.  Please contact your train company.
