Steam, Museum of the Great Western Railway, celebrates the story of the men and women who built the Great Western Railway.
It is located in Swindon in a restored Grade II listed building in the centre of the Great Western Historic Area formerly the Swindon Railway Works.
The Museum recreates the atmosphere of the original works using sights, smells and sounds to bring history to life. The displays use interactive exhibits, archive film footage, videos and audio tracks to complement the world renowned collections of famous Great Western locomotives, carriages, rolling stock, posters, archive photographs and railway memorabilia.
The museum is 10 minutes walk from Swindon Station. It is open daily from 10.00 to 17.30 Monday to Saturday and 11.00 to 17.30 Sunday.
During the winter months the museum closes at 17.00. Discounted admission to Steam is available when purchased at the same time as a rail ticket.
Key conditions
No further discounts apply to the admission part of the ticket. Railcard discounts are valid on the rail portion of the ticket. On arrival at the Museum customers should present the outward portion of their rail ticket for entry. No refunds are permitted on the admission ticket for the museum. Normal refunds apply for the rail portion of the ticket. Passengers over 60 must produce proof of their age.
