Timetable Changes

You can find out about any changes to the published National Rail timetable here

The National Rail Timetable is changed twice a year.

The current timetable started on Sunday 2 June 2024 and operates until Saturday 14 December 2024.

The next timetable will start on Sunday 15 December 2024 and will operate until Saturday 17 May 2025.

Planned timetables are subject to change, so please use the Journey Planner to check for the most up-to-date information before you travel, or see Upcoming Timetable Changes below for details of specific train companies. You can also check the Timetable Information page for details of any changes to when timetable information will be available.

Published Timetable of the Day

National Rail operates a Published Timetable of the Day, which gives the schedule of passenger services (including rail replacement services) on the day you plan to travel. This is different from the existing May/June or December timetable. The Published Timetable of the Day will be available no later than 22:00 on the day before the changes happen. All changes will be reflected in the Journey Planner and on the Live Trains page, the places where you will always find the most up-to-date timetable information.

No significant changes will be made to the Gatwick Express timetable from Sunday 15 December 2024.

Great Northern

The following key changes will be made to the Great Northern timetable from Sunday 15 December 2024:

Letchworth Garden City - London Kings Cross: Monday to Friday

  • Three additional services will run in both the morning and evening peaks between Letchworth Garden City and London Kings Cross, calling at Hitchin, Knebworth and Welwyn North only.

  • In the morning, services will depart Letchworth Garden City at 07:17, 07:45 and 08:17.

  • In the evening, services will depart London Kings Cross at 17:24, 17:54 and 18:24.

Peterborough - London Kings Cross: Monday to Friday

There will be an additional service in both the morning and evening peak between Peterborough and London Kings Cross, calling at Huntingdon, St Neots, Biggleswade and Stevenage.

  • In the morning, the service will depart Peterborough at 07:34, arriving in London Kings Cross at 08:44

  • In the evening, the service will depart London Kings Cross at 16:42, arriving in Peterborough at 17:54.

Great Western Railway (GWR)

Northern

Northern train timetables will change on Sunday 15 December 2024. There will be changes to the timings of trains, as well as a handful of services added and removed. But most services will run at the same level as they do in the current June 24 timetable, with some slight re-timings in places.

What's new?

December 2024 will see the introduction of more electric '323' trains to the Northern fleet, the introduction of a Leeds - Huddersfield service and the opening of the Newcastle – Ashington (Northumberland line) service.

Changes by routes

East

Leeds – Huddersfield: New two-hourly Leeds – Huddersfield via Dewsbury stopping service. (TransPennine Express will also operate two hourly, combining to provide an hourly stopping service on the route.)

Leeds – York: With the conclusion of the current phase of Sunday engineering work between Church Fenton and York, the Leeds – York stopping service will revert to the normal timetable, rather than some services being diverted to run to / from Selby.

Late services will continue to be amended and replaced by buses on Monday to Thursday nights while work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade continues.

Huddersfield: Weekend work in connection with Transpennine Route Upgrade will take place in the Huddersfield area from January until May 2025.

  • Leeds – Dewsbury – Huddersfield services will divert from Mirfield via Brighouse to Halifax (and Bradford Interchange on Saturdays).

  • Bradford – Huddersfield Saturday services will not operate. Leeds – Bradford – Huddersfield Sunday services will terminate / start at Halifax.

  • Huddersfield – Sheffield services will start / terminate at Lockwood.

North West

Following the arrival of additional Class 323 electric trains, Northern will make some changes to planned train formations to provide additional capacity.

  • Those Blackpool – Manchester Airport services which have been temporarily covered by 4 car Class 331s, will return to 6-car formations

  • 4 car Class 331 trains will be used on most Liverpool – Blackpool services and some Manchester – Hadfield services

  • Some timing alterations are made to Cumbrian Coast services to improve performance, with minor adjustments to some running times, and a review of the timings of crossing moves at St Bees. In addition, some minor alterations improve connections with long-distance services at Carlisle

  • Salford Central station will be closed to customers for the next phase of station upgrade works from 10 February to 20 April. Trains can run through the station as normal but will not call (with the exception of some Sundays in March / April)

  • Salford Crescent station will also be closed on some weekends between 1 March and 18 May 2025

  • Manchester – Wigan via Bolton and via Atherton. Late-night services will continue to be amended and replaced by buses on Sunday to Thursday nights, while work to electrify the route between Wigan and Bolton is completed.

North East

Northumberland Line – as announced by Northumberland Council, the new Northumberland Line service is expected to be up and running in December 2024.

  • Stations at Ashington, Newsham and Seaton Delaval are due to open this year.

  • Bedlington, Blyth Bebside and Northumberland Park are under construction and due to open in 2025

ScotRail

South Western Railway

Southeastern

The next Southeastern timetable starts on Sunday 15 December and there will be an additional 44 services per day, totalling 220 per week.

Headlines:

12 additional ‘rounder’ services will be introduced on the Sidcup and Greenwich lines in the morning and evening peaks, improving access to the Elizabeth line, as well as linking the Sidcup line with London Cannon Street and New Cross.

These services will call at: London Cannon Street, London Bridge, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park, Charlton, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich Arsenal, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Erith, Slade Green, Crayford, Bexley, Albany Park, Sidcup, New Eltham, Mottingham, Lee, Hither Green, St Johns, New Cross, London Bridge and London Cannon Street.

Off-peak and evening stopping services between London Victoria and Orpington via Herne Hill will increase, to provide trains every 15 minutes – enabling a ‘turn up and go’ Metro timetable.

Two evening services from London Charing Cross to Maidstone East will be extended to Ashford International, calling at Bearsted, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham, Lenham and Charing.

Changes by route:

Metro

12 additional London Cannon Street rounder services will run via Greenwich and Sidcup in both directions across the morning and evening peak.

Extra services (stopping at all stations except Lewisham)

  • 07:35, 08:05 and 08:36 London Cannon Street rounder services via Sidcup and Greenwich.

  • 16:04 London Cannon Street rounder service via Sidcup and Greenwich.

  • 08:32 London Cannon Street rounder service via Greenwich and Sidcup.

  • 16:02 and half hourly until 19:02 London Cannon Street rounder service via Greenwich and Sidcup.

There are also additional part rounder services:

  • 06:27 New Cross to London Cannon Street via Bexleyheath and Greenwich, calling at all stations.

  • 15:29, 15:59 and 16:29 Slade Green to London Cannon Street via Greenwich calling at all stations.

Greenwich and Woolwich line

More services are running between Slade Green and London Cannon Street via Woolwich and Greenwich at peak times.

This will increase frequency at Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill and Westcombe Park to six trains an hour, with a 10-minute interval at peak times.

Woolwich Dockyard, Erith and Belvedere will also have six trains an hour at peak times.

At Charlton, Woolwich Arsenal, Plumstead, Abbey Wood and Slade Green there will be eight trains an hour at peak times.

To improve the waiting time for travel between Abbey Wood and Dartford trains will run at 15-minute intervals.

Bexleyheath and Sidcup lines

To provide an earlier arrival into London on weekdays the 05:23 Dartford to London Charing Cross via Bexleyheath will depart 11 minutes earlier at 05:12.

To provide an earlier direct service from the Bexleyheath line stations to Abbey Wood for inter-change with the Elizabeth line there will be an additional 06:27 New Cross to London Cannon Street service via Bexleyheath and Greenwich calling at all stations on weekdays.

There will be a 05:05 service from Dartford to London Charing Cross calling at all stations via Sidcup and Lewisham to fill a 32-minute gap during weekdays.

London Victoria to Orpington

Extra trains will run Monday to Friday on this route during off peak and evenings to provide an all-day service with four per trains an hour. The 15-minute interval delivers a turn up and go frequency.

  • Four trains an hour into London Victoria between 06:03 until 23:33

  • Four trains an hour from London Victoria between 05:57 and 23:27

  • This increases the service frequency at Brixton, Herne Hill, West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Penge East, Kent House, Beckenham Junction, Shortlands, Bromley South, Bickley and Petts Wood.

Mainline and High Speed

To provide an earlier arrival in London the 05:48 Dover to London St Pancras International on weekdays will start earlier at 05:45.

To give school pupils more time to get on and off the trains, the 07:33 and 08:05 Strood to Tonbridge services are starting a minute earlier, and they’ll have additional dwell time at New Hythe and Aylesford.

To fill an hour gap between Chartham and Chilham, the 08:44 Ramsgate to London Charing Cross service will run at 08:42 with additional stops at Chartham (09:11) and Chilham (09:14).

To offer more evening services the 21:29 and 22:29 London Charing Cross to Maidstone East trains will run to Ashford on weekdays, calling at Bearsted, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham, Lenham and Charing.

Southern

The following key changes will be made to the Southern timetable from Sunday 15 December 2024:

Norwood Junction - London Bridge via Sydenham: Monday to Friday

From Monday to Friday, there will be five new services operating, with three in the morning peak and two in the evening. These services will call at all stations between Norwood Junction and London Bridge.

The morning peak services will depart Norwood Junction at:

  • 07:37 (arriving at London Bridge at 08:01)

  • 08:04 (arriving at London Bridge at 08:31)

  • 09:04 (arriving at London Bridge at 09:31)

The evening peak services will depart London Bridge at:

  • 17:10

  • 17:40

After Norwood Junction, these services will continue to West Croydon and Sutton.

East Croydon - London Victoria via Selhurst: Monday to Friday

An additional service will depart East Croydon at 08:40 and will call all stations to London Victoria.

The current 07:50 Selhurst to London Victoria service will now start at East Croydon.

Two additional services have been added from London Victoria to East Croydon, calling all stations via Norbury and Selhurst. These services will depart London Victoria at 06:57 and 07:56.

Sutton - London Bridge via Tulse Hill and Hackbridge: Monday to Friday

The 08:20 Streatham Hill to London Bridge service will now start at Sutton at 08:07 and will call stations between Sutton and London Bridge via Hackbridge and Tulse Hill.

The 07:50 Streatham Hill to London Bridge service will no longer run.

The 07:20 East Croydon to London Bridge service will now start at Sutton and travel via West Croydon and Selhurst.

An additional service, departing at 17:52 will run between London Bridge and Sutton, calling all stations via Tulse Hill and Hackbridge.

London Bridge - Uckfield: Monday to Friday

An additional service will run from London Bridge to Uckfield, departing London Bridge at 22:07.

East Grinstead - London Victoria: Monday to Friday

Additional London Victoria to East Grinstead services will run, departing London Victoria at 20:20 and 21:20.

Additional East Grinstead to London Victoria services will run, departing East Grinstead at 21:36 and 22:36.

Bognor Regis / Littlehampton - London via Horsham: Monday to Thursday

An additional morning service will run between Bognor Regis and London Bridge via Littlehampton and Horsham. This service will depart Bognor Regis at 07:02 (Littlehampton at 07:23) and will arrive in London Bridge at 08:58.

An additional evening service will run from London Bridge to Bognor Regis via Horsham and Littlehampton. This service will depart London Bridge at 18:03, arriving into Bognor Regis at 19:49 (Littlehampton 19:28).

Stansted Express
