Braintree is a town in Essex that lies on the River Brain to the south of the former Roman road that connects Braughing to Colchester. It is located 10 miles (16 km) to the north of Chelmsford, 15 miles (24 km) west of Colchester and about 46 miles (74 km) away from London. Geographically the town is characterized by a rural area where crops are grown to the north, while the south is occupied by various industrial areas such as the Springwood, Park Drive and Broomhills Industrial Estate.

Braintree hosts two weekly markets just outside the Town Hall in Market Square. These stretch along Bank Street and the High Street. The markets are held on Wednesdays and on Saturdays. The
town’s visitors will find around the Market Place numerous stores, restaurants and pubs, as well as the George Yard shopping centre. Located five-minute walk to the town centre, the 1869 Victorian station building of Braintree serves trains to London calling at Braintree Freeport station and Witham, where the Braintree Branch Line joins the Great Eastern Main Line to London Liverpool Street. It is currently managed by Abellio Greater Anglia that operates daytime trains. On weekdays the typical off-peak service consists in one train per hour calling at Witham and terminating at London Liverpool Street. Sundays services terminate at Witham where travellers will have to change to catch connection trains towards London.
