East Lothian Council Concessionary Fares Scheme

In the local East Lothian Rail Concession Scheme area (East Lothian, Edinburgh and West Lothian) holders of NEC, Taxicard  and companions of eligible blind people will travel at reduced rates. The local scheme area covers all stations in East Lothian, Edinburgh and West Lothian.  Only rail journeys starting or ending at a station in East Lothian qualify for concessionary fares.

Validity Times

The current Concessionary Rail Travel Scheme operates only during off-peak times for National Entitlement Card holders.

Off peak travel is between 09.15 - 16.43 and 18.10 - 24.00. (Mon – Fri).

Off peak also includes weekends and Public holidays.

Non-visually impaired National Entitlement Card Holders shall be entitled to reduced fares on Train Services as follows:

Single tickets - half the adult Standard Class Day single fare or Standard Class Cheap Day Single where available

Return tickets - half the adult Standard Class Day Return fare or Standard Class Cheap Day Return where available;

Visually impaired Card Holders travel free of charge under the National Concessionary Rail Arrangement. The Companion of a visually impaired Card Holder shall be entitled to travel at a cost of 5p and 10p respectively for Single and Return journeys on Train Services.

The conditions regarding validity and break of journey are the same as those which apply to full price tickets of the same type, as such conditions are set out in the National Rail Conditions of Travel and available for inspection at all staffed stations during working hours.

Within East Lothian i.e. Drem, Dunbar, Longniddry, Musselburgh, North Berwick, Prestonpans and Wallyford.

  • Edinburgh,
  • Edinburgh Park,

  • Haymarket,

  • South Gyle,
  • Uphall,
  • West Calder and
  • Wester Hailes



Tickets may be purchased at any station except:

  • Addiewell,
  • Bathgate,
  • Breich,
  • Fauldhouse,
  • Kirknewton,
  • Linlithgow,
  • Livingston North and South,
  • Uphall or
  • West Calder.

The origin station must not be one of these stations. The origin or destination station on the ticket must always be an East Lothian station.

East Lothian Concessionary discount is not available for travel on Peak time train services.
