Easter Travel Summary 2016

Easter 2016 will be one of the biggest Easter investment programmes to date, with Network Rail delivering 450 individual projects, which is roughly 20% more than Easter 2015. It is estimated around £55m will be invested by Network Rail staff over Easter 2016.

This page gives an overview of the services that each Train Operating Company will be providing over the Easter holiday period (between Friday 25 March and Monday 28 March 2016).

Trains are expected to be exceptionally busy on Easter Monday, and there may be a queuing system in place at Barking, as West Ham United have a home fixture and London Underground services are not running.

Chiltern Railways

Good Friday - An amended Saturday service is in operation on most routes, with no trains running between Marylebone and Amersham due to London Underground engineering work. An hourly train service between Aylesbury Vale Parkway and Amersham, with a connecting bus between Amersham and Beaconsfield, for onward trains to/from Marylebone.

Saturday - A normal Saturday service is in operation on most routes, with no trains running between Marylebone and Amersham due to London Underground engineering work. An hourly train service between Aylesbury Vale Parkway and Amersham, with a connecting bus between Amersham and Beaconsfield, for onward trains to/from Marylebone.

CrossCountry

Good Friday - Trains are diverted between Birmingham New Street and Stafford and will not call at Wolverhampton. Trains are diverted between Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford extending journey times by up to 30 minutes.

Saturday - Trains are diverted between Birmingham New Street and Stafford and will not call at Wolverhampton. Trains are diverted between Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford extending journey times by up to 30 minutes. Trains between Cardiff Central and Brighton / Portsmouth & Southsea will be diverted and will not call at Southampton Central.

Easter Sunday - Trains are diverted between Birmingham New Street and Stafford and will not call at Wolverhampton. Trains are diverted between Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford extending journey times by up to 30 minutes. Trains between Cardiff Central and Brighton / Portsmouth & Southsea will be diverted and will not call at Southampton Central. Buses also replace trains between Reading and Swindon / Oxford.

Easter Monday - Trains are diverted between Birmingham New Street and Stafford and will not call at Wolverhampton. Passengers should change at Birmingham New Street / Stafford and use other road / rail services to / from Wolverhampton. Trains are diverted between Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford extending journey times by up to 30 minutes.

East Midlands Trains

Good Friday - Normal service

Saturday - Normal service

Easter Sunday - Services between Kettering and Corby, and between Matlock and Derby are being replaced by buses due to engineering work.

Services between Derby and Chesterfield are being retimed and will have extended journey times due to engineering work in the area.

Easter Monday - Normal service

TransPennine Express

Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive - Normal service except for engineering works.

Gatwick Express

There will be no service from Good Friday up to and including Easter Monday as there is engineering work taking place between London Victoria and Clapham Junction. These works mean London Victoria will be closed to Gatwick Express and Southern services. Passengers are advised to travel to London Bridge to use alternative Southern services or London Blackfriars to use Thameslink services. Overnight trains are replaced by buses between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport.

Grand Central

Good Friday - Normal service

Saturday - Reduced service and extended journey times due to engineering work at Peterborough.

Easter Monday - Normal service

Great Northern

Good Friday - A revised service is in operation with fewer trains on some routes. No trains from Huntingdon to Peterborough from approximately 22:45 until the end of service.

Saturday - A revised service is in operation. Major engineering work means that buses are replacing trains between Huntingdon and Peterborough.

Easter Sunday - A revised service is in operation. Major engineering work means that buses are replacing trains between Huntingdon and Peterborough.

Easter Monday - A revised service is in operation with fewer trains on some routes. No trains from Huntingdon to Peterborough until approximately 06:30.

Great Western Railway

Good Friday - Amended service on some routes due to engineering work. Additional services will operate between London Paddington and the West of England, and also from Swansea to London Paddington.

Saturday - Amended service on some routes due to engineering work. Amended Saturday service will also apply on some routes.

Easter Sunday - Amended service on some routes due to engineering work. Amended Sunday service will also apply on some routes.

Easter Monday - Amended service on some routes due to engineering work. Additional services will run from the West of England to London Paddington.

Heathrow Connect

Good Friday - Trains leave London Paddington at 04:42, 05:03, and every 30 minutes until 23:03. Trains leave Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 at 05:20, 05:48, and every 30 minutes until 23:18 and then 00:07.

Saturday - Trains leave London Paddington at 04:42, 05:03, and every 30 minutes until 23:03. Trains leave Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 at 05:20, 05:48, and every 30 minutes until 23:18 and then 00:07.

Heathrow Express

Good Friday - Trains leave London Paddington at 05:25, 05:55, and every 30 minutes until 23:25. Trains leave Heathrow Terminal 5 at 05:27, 05:57, and every 30 minutes until 23:27, and then 23:53.

Saturday - Trains leave London Paddington at 05:25, 05:55, and every 30 minutes until 23:25. Trains leave Heathrow Terminal 5 at 05:27, 05:57, and every 30 minutes until 23:27, and then 23:53.

Easter Sunday - Trains leave London Paddington at 06:25 and every 15 minutes until 23:25. Trains leave Heathrow Terminal 5 06:18, 06:48, and every 15 minutes until 23:48.

Easter Monday - Trains leave London Paddington at 05:25, 05:55, and every 30 minutes until 23:25. Trains leave Heathrow Terminal 5 at 05:27, 05:57, and every 30 minutes until 23:27, and then 23:54.

Hull Trains

Good Friday - An amended service.

Saturday - A reduced service will be in place with extended journey times due to engineering work taking place between Peterborough and London Kings Cross.

Easter Sunday - A reduced service will be in place with extended journey times due to engineering work taking place between Peterborough and London Kings Cross.

Easter Monday - An amended service.

Island Line

Good Friday - Normal Saturday service.

London Midland

Good Friday - Train services between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham New Street will run between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe only – with a reduced service. Buses are replacing trains between Crewe and Stafford. A special 2-hourly train service will run between Stafford and Wolverhampton.

Train services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street will run between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton only - to a special timetable based on Saturday service frequency. Some services are extended to run additionally between Wolverhampton and Stafford.

Buses are replacing trains between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street.

An amended service is running between Crewe and Northampton / London Euston and trains will not call at Stone and Stafford. Rail replacement buses will operate between Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford.
Services on the following routes will operate to a special timetable at a reduced level of frequency:
Lichfield Trent Valley – Redditch (via Birmingham New Street).
Birmingham New Street – Walsall / Rugeley Trent Valley.

Services on the following routes will operate to a special timetable based on a Saturday service:
London Euston – Tring / Milton Keynes Central / Northampton.
Birmingham New Street – Birmingham International / Coventry / Northampton / London Euston.
Birmingham New Street – Worcester / Hereford.
Services between Bletchley and Bedford will not run.

Easter Monday - Train services between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham New Street will run between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe only – with a reduced service. Buses are replacing trains between Crewe and Stafford. A special 2-hourly train service will run between Stafford and Wolverhampton.

Until 12:00 train services between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Northampton / Birmingham New Street will operate with a reduced service. After 12:00 trains between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Northampton / Birmingham New Street will with a reduced Saturday service.

Train services between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International / Coventry / Northampton will operate to an amended timetable.

After 22:30 trains from London Euston to Northampton will run between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central only - to special timetable at reduced frequency. Buses are replacing trains between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton.

Services on the following routes will operate with a reduced service:
Lichfield Trent Valley – Redditch (via Birmingham New Street).
Birmingham New Street – Walsall / Rugeley Trent Valley.

Trains between Birmingham New Street and Worcester / Hereford will operate to a special timetable based on Saturday service frequency.

Services between Bletchley and Bedford will not run.

London Overground

Good Friday -

  • Buses replace trains between Camden Road and Stratford
  • Buses replace trains between Highbury & Islington and Shadwell

Northern

A normal service will run over the Easter period, with the exception of the following routes:

  • Trains to and from Manchester Victoria / Salford Central (Between Thursday 24 March and Sunday 3 April)
  • Between Buxton and Hazel Grove (Between Friday 25 March and Monday 28 March)
  • Between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester (Saturday 26 March and Sunday 27 March)
  • Between Scarborough and Sheffield (Saturday 26 March and Sunday 27 March)

ScotRail

Work continues over on the Easter period at Glasgow Queen Street High Level.

Southern

There will be no Southern service to and from London Victoria from Good Friday up to and including Easter Monday as there is engineering work taking place between London Victoria and Clapham Junction. Buses are also replacing trains between Horsham and Arundel. More details are available on the future engineering work pages.

Southeastern

From Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive, the following will apply:

  • Amended service based on the Saturday timetable on Good Friday, Saturday, and Easter Monday. On Easter Sunday an amended service based on the Sunday timetable is in operation
  • No trains between Gravesend / Swanley and Faversham, Strood and Maidstone West, and Sheerness-on-Sea and Sittingbourne
  • No trains between Plumstead and Dartford
  • Buses will continue to replace trains between Dover Priory and Folkestone Central / West during the ongoing repairs to the sea wall near Dover

Between Good Friday and Easter Sunday only:

  • London Bridge station will be closed to Southeastern services and there will be no trains serving London Cannon Street, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, and Westcombe Park

On Easter Sunday:

  • No trains between Hither Green and Dartford via Sidcup
  • No trains between Ashford International and Dover Priory
  • No trains between Battle and Hastings until approximately 13:30

South West Trains

Major engineering work in the Wandsworth Town area means no trains will run between Clapham Junction and Barnes, Friday to Monday.

No South West Trains service will run from the following stations:

Wandsworth Town
Putney (London Underground stations East Putney and Putney Bridge are not affected)
Spectators wishing to travel to watch the Boat Race can still do so – by choosing one of the following options:

RAIL REPLACEMENT BUSES:


There will be rail replacement buses running between Clapham Junction and Barnes, calling at Wandsworth Town and Putney, please allow extra time for your journey.

RAIL:

South West Trains will run to and from the following stations throughout the day to help spectators travel to watch the Boat Races:

Barnes, Barnes Bridge, Chiswick, Kew Bridge & Mortlake

However, services will be travelling via alternative routes, so may take longer than usual and may require changing trains.

For example, London Waterloo to Barnes will take 60 minutes, as opposed to 20 minutes.

TfL Rail

Good Friday - 4 trains per hour are running between London Liverpool Street and Gidea Park, with buses replacing trains between Gidea Park and Shenfield.

Saturday - 4 trains per hour are running between London Liverpool Street and Gidea Park, with buses replacing trains between Gidea Park and Shenfield.

Easter Sunday - No trains will run between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield. Replacement buses will run between Shenfield and Newbury Park (London Underground station), calling at Brentwood, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Romford and Chadwell Heath. Replacement buses will also run between Romford and Stratford, calling at Chadwell Heath, Goodmayes, Seven Kings, Ilford, Manor Park and Forest Gate. Passengers can use London Underground Central Line services between Newbury Park and London Liverpool Street.

Easter Monday - No trains will run between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield. Replacement buses will run between Shenfield and Newbury Park (London Underground station), calling at Brentwood, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Romford and Chadwell Heath. Thameslink

Good Friday - A reduced service is in operation with fewer trains on some routes.

• Buses replace trains between Flitwick and Bedford until 08:45
• First three northbound departures from Brighton will start from Hassocks
• No service between Wimbledon and Sutton or between Streatham and Sutton.
• Last two southbound services to Brighton will terminate at Haywards Heath

Easter Monday - A reduced service is in operation with fewer trains on some routes.

Virgin Trains

Good Friday to Easter Monday - London to Birmingham New Street/Wolverhampton – Three services will run per hour to / from Birmingham New Street. One service (every two hours) will be extended to/from Wolverhampton/Stafford, not calling at Sandwell & Dudley.

London to North Wales services will operate between Crewe/Chester and Holyhead

London to Manchester Piccadilly – From midday, services reduced to two per hour, both via Macclesfield. Passengers for Wilmslow should change at Stockport for local services.

London/Birmingham to Edinburgh via the West Midlands will operate between Birmingham International and Edinburgh, and be diverted via Wolverhampton (not calling at Sandwell & Dudley) Shrewsbury and Crewe.

Good Friday and Easter Monday – Buses replace trains between Stafford and Crewe / Stoke-on-Trent, and between Birmingham New Street and Sandwell & Dudley / Wolverhampton.

Virgin Trains East Coast

Good Friday - An hourly service is running between London Kings Cross and Leeds, with some London Kings Cross to Newcastle services extending to start / terminate at Edinburgh

Saturday - An amended service is in operation. Major engineering work between Huntingdon and Peterborough means that a reduced service will run to and from London Kings Cross.  On Saturday morning and Saturday evening trains will be diverted via Cambridge with journey times extended by approximately 60 minutes.

Easter Sunday - An amended service is in operation. Major engineering work between Huntingdon and Peterborough means that a reduced service will run to and from London Kings Cross.  On Sunday morning trains will be diverted via Cambridge with journey times extended by approximately 60 minutes.

Easter Monday - An hourly service is running between London Kings Cross and Leeds, with some London Kings Cross to Newcastle services extending to start / terminate at Edinburgh
