Reading
Short or long trip? Reading is a simple way to switch off, boost your mood, and learn something new, no matter your journey time. Research indicates that reading for just 6 minutes a day is enough to help reduce stress levels by 60%** – it’s a no brainer!
Learning a new language
Discovering another language is an exciting adventure at any age. It opens doors to new cultures and connections and can make travel even more rewarding. So, why not start practising your favourite phrases on the train? Pick up a language book or download an app to get you started – it’s a simple, enjoyable way to turn your journey into something truly enriching.
Photography
Taking pictures is a great way to make the most of your train journey. You don’t want to miss out on some of Britain’s most scenic views that you can only capture on a train. Grab your phone or camera and capture that shot!
JOEY, recording artist
“I use the journey to listen to tracks from producers where I have to fill in with my lyrics.
It’s a really good focus for me. I’m not sure what it is but working at home I end up doing something else, so the train is my zone to do that.”
Get creative
Release that dopamine hit when you grab your drawing kit, sketching book, or a notebook to work on some creative writing. Anything that is creative can lead to ‘flow’ states which create moments of deep focus and immersion, helping time to melt away.
Pick up the knitting and crochet needles
They are perfect for a train journey. Watch a few how-to videos and start crafting something unique. From cosy scarves to stylish accessories, you’ll be making pieces you can be proud of – and who knows, this hobby could even grow into a side hustle!
Board games
These improve cognitive skills through problem solving, while also being packed with fun, friendly competition and helping the time fly by. Not only can they be a source of mood-boosting laughter, but they can also help build lasting bonds and memories with your travel companion.
