Description

The RMT Union is currently in dispute with Northern over proposed changes to the future role of the conductor. The RMT Union are taking strike action today.

To help keep you on the move, Northern will run more than 1,350 services. The majority of available trains will operate between 07:00 and 19:00 only, as Northern focus on running as many trains as they can to get you into work and home again. During these hours, around 60% of the normal weekday timetable will operate.

As the overall number of trains running will be reduced, trains and any replacement buses are expected to be extremely busy. Please allow extra time for journeys, plan carefully and consider whether travel is necessary.

Customers may be able to use their ticket on other train operator services and will be able to use tickets on Arriva Bus services (including Yorkshire Tiger) to make journeys otherwise made by rail.

Customer advice for advance Northern tickets

Northern have arranged ticket acceptance on a number of other train operators to help Northern customers with Advance Purchase tickets (your ticket will say AP Northern only).

The following operators will accept these tickets: Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, TransPennine Express, Grand Central, Hull Trains, Virgin Trains East Coast, and Virgin Trains on their West Coast route.

Customers are advised to travel as close as possible to the original booked train times.

Customer advice for advance tickets requiring a Northern connecting service

Customers who have an advance ticket with a Northern origin or destination station, where Northern have offered a connection using another train operator’s service, and want to travel on a different date than is printed on their ticket, can travel on Saturday 13 January for tickets dated today. 

This will be honoured by the following operators: Arriva Trains Wales, Chiltern Railways, c2c, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Grand Central, Greater Anglia, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, London Northwestern Railway, ScotRail, Southeastern, Southern, Thameslink and Virgin Trains East Coast.

Customer advice for other ticket types with Northern origin or destination (except Advance tickets)

Most tickets, except Advance tickets, enable you to travel on other operator’s trains on your chosen route, whatever the day of your journey. Many tickets also offer flexibility to travel on a different day. However, customers wishing to travel on a different day with ticket types such as Off-Peak Day Returns for a strike day will need to exchange their tickets, without any admin charge. This should be applied for at the original point of sale.

Customers who decide not to travel on a strike day are entitled to a full refund if their origin station or destination station is on the Northern network, with no admin fee charged. This should be applied for from the original point of sale.

Travelling on Virgin Trains East Coast services:

Virgin Trains East Coast will accept ‘Northern-only’ Advance products dated for today only via a reasonable route.

Virgin Trains East Coast will accept ‘VTEC and Connections’ Advance and First Advance tickets dated today and booked for journeys requiring a Northern connection will also be valid on Saturday 13 January 2018.

If travelling on a date unaffected by the action, customers are being advised to travel at their booked time wherever possible (although seat reservations cannot automatically be carried over).

Customers can also use Virgin Trains West Coast today.
