Description

As part of the Midland Mainline upgrade, major engineering work is taking place at Derby station. This includes the building of a new platform, re-laying 17 km of track to reduce bottlenecks, building new signals and laying 150,000 tonnes of new ballast. 

Passenger numbers at Derby have doubled in the last 20 years. This upgrade is an unique opportunity to upgrade a 50 year old track layout to increase capacity and improve reliability. More details on the work at Derby can be found here.

As a result, there will be significant changes to services that normally run to, from or via Derby.

CrossCountry:

Scotland / North East England and Birmingham New Street:

Between Sunday 22 July and Sunday 2 September, CrossCountry services running between Scotland / North East England and Birmingham New Street will be diverted, with journey times being extended by up to 30 minutes. No CrossCountry services will call at Derby station.

From Monday 3 September to Sunday 7 October, CrossCountry services will call at Derby station, however journey times on services between Scotland / North East England and Birmingham New Street will be extended by up to 30 minutes.

Nottingham and Birmingham New Street:

Between Sunday 22 July and Sunday 2 September, CrossCountry services between Nottingham and Birmingham New Street will be largely unaffected by these diversions. Please note that these trains will not call at Spondon or Long Eaton. During this period, no CrossCountry services will call at Derby station.

Replacement buses will run between:

  • Derby and Burton-on-Trent
  • Derby and Chesterfield
  • Derby and Nottingham

 

From Monday 3 September to Sunday 7 October, an hourly train service will operate between Birmingham and Nottingham via Derby.

East Midlands Trains:

Derby to Crewe:

Services between Derby and Crewe will be replaced by a bus service between Derby and Uttoxeter from 22 July to 2 September. A train service will operate between Uttoxeter and Crewe.

Derby to London St Pancras:

From 30 July until 7 October  there will be no direct train services between Sheffield and Derby. Replacement buses will run between Chesterfield and Derby.

From 30 July to 7 October, one train per hour will run between Sheffield / Chesterfield and London St Pancras, and one train per hour will run between Derby and London St Pancras.

Between 13 and 19 August there will be no direct trains between Derby and London St Pancras. Replacement buses will run between Derby and East Midlands Parkway to connect with train services to / from London St Pancras.

Derby to Matlock:

From 30 July to 24 August, train services will run between Derby and Matlock only. No through services will run between Matlock and Nottingham.

Between 25 August and 7 October, no trains will run between Derby and Matlock. Replacement buses will run between these stations.

Derby to Nottingham:

Between 22 and 29 July a reduced train service will operate between Derby and Nottingham.

From 30 July to 2 September, no trains will run between Derby and Nottingham. Replacement buses will run between Derby and Nottingham.

From 3 September to 7 October, a train service will operate between Derby and Nottingham.

Northern:

Northern services running to / from Derby will be re-timed throughout this period of engineering work.
