August Bank Holiday Travel Summary

Railway Improvement and Engineering Work

Bank holidays are a time when less people travel on the railway, and when traditionally a considerable amount of improvement and engineering work is undertaken on Britain's rail network.
Network Rail will be carrying out improvement and essential engineering work on parts of the railway network over the August bank holiday weekend in England and Wales, between Saturday 25 and Monday 27 August.

Major projects are taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend:

NO TRAINS TO / FROM LONDON EUSTON from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 August

Changes to Southeastern services from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 August

Buses on some routes between Manchester and Wigan North Western / Preston / Blackburn from Saturday 25 to Friday 31 August

Amended service at Birmingham International and Coventry from Saturday 25 August until 12:00 on Monday 27 August

Chiltern Railways

 

Saturday 25 August

No Chiltern Railways services between Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham Moor Street, customers can use West Midlands Railway services.

An amended Saturday timetable will operate to and from London due to the engineering work taking place on the West Coast Main Line to/from London Euston. Trains will convey extra carriages.

In order to free-up resource for additional demand to and from Wembley Stadium, due to the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final, a reduced service of one train per hour will operate on the London Marylebone - Amersham - Aylesbury Vale Parkway route for the entire day.

Sunday 26 August

No Chiltern Railways services between Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham Moor Street, customers can use West Midlands Railway services.

An amended Sunday timetable will operate to and from London due to the engineering work taking place on the West Coast Main Line to/from London Euston. Trains will convey extra carriages.

Monday 27 August 

No Chiltern Railways services between Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham Moor Street, customers can use West Midlands Railway services.

An amended Saturday timetable will operate to and from London due to the engineering work taking place on the West Coast Main Line to/from London Euston. Trains will convey extra carriages.

An amended Saturday timetable will operate on all Chiltern Railways routes. No trains will call at Sudbury Hill Harrow or Sudbury & Harrow Road.

CrossCountry

 

Saturday 25 August

Trains will be diverted, and will not call at Motherwell. Buses will operate between Glasgow Central and Motherwell.

Trains will be diverted, and will be unable to call at Derby, because of engineering work. Buses will replace trains between Burton-on-Trent and Derby, Chesterfield and Derby, and Nottingham and Derby.

Trains will be diverted, and will not call at Birmingham International or Coventry, because of engineering work. Replacement buses will run between Birmingham International, Coventry and Leamington Spa.

Sunday 26 August

Trains will start from and terminate at Edinburgh. Replacement buses will run between Edinburgh and Motherwell.

Trains will be diverted, and will be unable to call at Derby, because of engineering work. Buses will replace trains between Burton-on-Trent and Derby, Chesterfield and Derby, and Nottingham and Derby.

Until 16:45 - trains will be diverted between Manchester Piccadilly and Stafford, not calling at Stockport, Macclesfield or Stoke-on-Trent. Replacement buses will operate between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent. Trains run by other operators will run between Stockport, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent.

Monday 27 August 

Trains will start from and terminate at Edinburgh. Replacement buses will run between Edinburgh and Motherwell.

East Midlands Trains

 

There may be changes to your journey throughout the bank holiday weekend due to the ongoing major improvement work taking place at Derby.

Saturday 25 August

A Saturday service will operate.

Sunday 26 August

Amended service between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street due to engineering works. Also buses will replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport until 16:45.

Sunday service on other routes.

Monday 27 August 

Amended service between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street due to engineering works.

Saturday 25 August

After 20:30 - trains between Reading and Basingstoke will be replaced by buses because of engineering work.

After 21:10 - trains will not run between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn. Replacement buses will operate in place of train services.

After 23:10 - no trains will call at Pangbourne, buses will run between Pangbourne and Tilehurst to connect with train services.

Sunday 26 August

Until 09:50 - trains between Reading and Basingstoke will be replaced by buses because of engineering work.

Until 09:50 - replacement buses will run between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn. These will leave earlier than the train services normally would. After this, a normal Sunday train service will operate.

The 22:15, 22:45 London Paddington to Didcot Parkway and the 23:15 and 23:53 Didcot Parkway to London Paddington services will not call at Pangbourne. Buses will run between Pangbourne and Tilehurst to connect with train services.

Monday 27 August 

After 21:10, trains will not run between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn. Replacement buses will operate in place of train services.

Greater Anglia

 

Saturday 25 August

Because of engineering work, buses will replace trains between Witham and Ipswich, and also between Marks Tey and Sudbury.

After 18:50 - buses replace trains between Ipswich and Felixstowe.

Sunday 26 August

Because of engineering works, the line between Chelmsford and Ipswich is closed. Buses will replace trains between Ingatestone and Colchester / Manningtree / Ipswich, between Chelmsford and Colchester (calling at all stations), between Witham and Braintree and also between Marks Tey and Sudbury.

Buses replace trains between Ipswich and Felixstowe.

Because of engineering work between London Liverpool Street and Cheshunt, the 07:32, 07:51 and 08:32 Cambridge to London Liverpool Street services will terminate at Stratford. The 08:57, 09:28 and 09:57 London Liverpool Street to Cambridge services will start from Stratford.

Monday 27 August 

Because of engineering work, buses will replace trains between Witham and Ipswich, and also between Marks Tey and Sudbury.

Buses replace trains between Ipswich and Felixstowe.

After 21:25 - buses will replace trains between Wickford and Southend Victoria.

A Saturday service will operate on West Anglia routes.

London North Eastern Railway

 

Saturday 25 August

Saturday service, except the 06:48 Glasgow Central to London Kings Cross service will start from Edinburgh at 08:00. A replacement bus will run from Motherwell at 07:15 to Edinburgh. Customers from Glasgow can use ScotRail services from Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh.

Sunday 26 August

Sunday service.

Monday 27 August 

The 04:40 service from York to London Kings Cross, and the 05:55 service from London Kings Cross to Leeds will not run on Bank Holiday Monday.

London Northwestern Railway

 

Major engineering work means that no trains will run to or from London Euston throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

Engineering work is also taking place between Birmingham International and Coventry, closing all lines on Saturday and Sunday, and until 12:00 on Monday.

Saturday 25 August

Train services between London Euston and Tring / Milton Keynes Central / Northampton and Birmingham New Street will not run.

Instead, you will need to use:

  • London Underground between Euston Square and Stanmore (you can use your National Rail ticket).
  • Replacement bus service between Stanmore London Underground station and Hemel Hempstead.
  • Trains between Hemel Hempstead and Rugby (2 trains per hour).
  • Replacement buses between Rugby and Birmingham International.
  • Trains between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street.

Trains between London Euston and Crewe will run between Northampton and Crewe only.

Sunday 26 August

Train services between London Euston and Tring / Milton Keynes Central / Northampton and Birmingham New Street will not run.

Instead, you will need to use:

Train services between Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street will run between Birmingham New Street and Crewe only. A replacement bus service will run between Crewe and Liverpool South Parkway, you can use Merseyrail services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street.

Monday 27 August

Train services between Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street will run between Birmingham New Street and Crewe only. A replacement bus service will run between Crewe and Liverpool South Parkway, you can use Merseyrail services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street.

London Overground

 

Saturday 25 August

London Euston - Watford Junction: No trains will run between London Euston and Watford Junction, replacement buses will operate.

Gospel Oak - Barking: Trains will not run between South Tottenham and Barking, replacement buses will run between Walthamstow Central and Barking.

Dalston Junction - Clapham Junction: Trains will be replaced by buses between Canada Water and Clapham Junction.

Sunday 26 August

London Euston - Watford Junction: No trains will run between London Euston and Watford Junction, replacement buses will operate.

Gospel Oak - Barking: Trains will not run between South Tottenham and Barking, replacement buses will run between Walthamstow Central and Barking.

Dalston Junction - Clapham Junction: Trains will be replaced by buses between Canada Water and Clapham Junction.

Stratford - Clapham Junction: Until 11:30 there will be no trains between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction, you can use your ticket on London Buses.

London Liverpool Street - Enfield Town / Cheshunt / Chingford: Until 10:15 buses will replace trains between Seven Sisters and Cheshunt, between Seven Sisters and Enfield Town, and also between Hackney Downs and Chingford (please note this information may be subject to late notice change, please check back later)

Monday 27 August 

London Euston - Watford Junction: No trains will run between London Euston and Kilburn High Road. You can use local buses or London Underground services.

Gospel Oak - Barking: Trains will not run between South Tottenham and Barking, replacement buses will run between Walthamstow Central and Barking.

Dalston Junction - Clapham Junction: Trains will be replaced by buses between Canada Water and Clapham Junction.

No trains will call at Brixton, customers can use London Underground to connect with train services.

Buses will replace trains between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge.

Buses will replace trains between Paddock Wood and Maidstone West.

Sunday 26 August

Services between London Victoria and Orpington will be amended to run to / from London Blackfriars. These services will run via Elephant & Castle and Herne Hill.

London Victoria to Dartford services will not run.

London Victoria to Orpington / Ramsgate / Canterbury East / Canterbury West / Dover Priory services will be diverted to run to / from London Blackfriars instead of London Victoria, and will be re-timed and will have amended calling patterns.

No trains will call at Brixton, customers can use London Underground to connect with train services.

There are no major engineering works planned in the South Western Railway area on Saturday.

Sunday 26 August

Trains between London Waterloo and Dorking will run between London Waterloo and Leatherhead only. Replacement buses will run between Leatherhead and Dorking.

Monday 27 August 

South Western Railway will run the Saturday timetable on the Holiday Monday. Some early morning services may be altered to fit in with other operators running a different service pattern. There are no major engineering works planned.

Stansted Express

Until 09:50 trains will be diverted because of engineering work between London Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs. This may result in a slightly extended journey time.

TransPennine Express

 

Saturday 25 August

Services to / from Glasgow Central will be diverted and will not call at Motherwell. Customers wishing to travel to / or from Motherwell will need to travel via Glasgow Central using services provided by other operators.

Sunday 26 August

Until 17:00, services to / from Glasgow Central will be replaced by coaches between Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell and Glasgow Central, extending journey times by up to 60 minutes.

Until 16:45, services between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield will be diverted and will not call at Stockport. Customers travelling to / from Stockport are advised to travel via and change at Manchester Piccadilly for replacement bus services (provided by other operators).

Monday 27 August 

There will be some changes to late night and overnight services due to planned engineering work.

Virgin Trains

 

Major engineering work means that no trains will run to or from London Euston throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

Engineering work is also taking place between Birmingham International and Coventry, closing all lines on Saturday and Sunday, and until 12:00 on Monday.

Trains will only run between:

  • Milton Keynes Central and Liverpool Lime Street.
  • Milton Keynes Central and Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe.
  • Milton Keynes Central and Rugby.
  • Birmingham International and Manchester Piccadilly.
  • Birmingham International and Edinburgh / Glasgow Central.
  • Crewe and Holyhead.
  • Preston and Glasgow Central.


Services between London Euston and Chester will not run.

Replacement buses will be running Rugby - Coventry - Birmingham International.

You can use alternative routes using different train operating companies to complete journeys to and from London.

Sunday 26 August

Trains will only run between:

  • Milton Keynes Central and Liverpool Lime Street. These trains will not call at Runcorn, customers travelling there can use replacement buses.
  • Milton Keynes Central and Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe.
  • Milton Keynes Central and Rugby.
  • Birmingham International and Manchester Piccadilly.
  • Until 17:00 Birmingham International and Carlisle (replacement buses Carlisle - Glasgow Central).
  • After 17:00 Birmingham International and Edinburgh / Glasgow Central
  • Until 17:00 Preston and Carlisle (replacement buses Carlisle - Glasgow Central).

West Midlands Railway

Buses replace trains between Tame Bridge Parkway and Walsall / Rugeley Trent Valley.

Monday 27 August 

Trains between Birmingham New Street and Worcester / Hereford, and between Birmingham New Street and Shrewsbury, will operate to a special Saturday timetable.

Please Note:

West Midlands Railway advise that the previously planned engineering work between Coventry and Nuneaton / Leamington Spa has been cancelled.
