Northern routes in the North West and Cumbria


Short-notice cancellations are expected in the North West and Cumbria on Sunday 14 July.

Services on some routes in and around the North West and Cumbria may be subject to disruption. Trains currently showing in journey planners may not run, therefore, you are advised to check your journey before travelling.

Last trains of the day may finish earlier than usual. If you do travel, please leave yourself plenty of time to do so, and don't rely on last services.

You cannot travel by Northern trains on the following routes - there are no Northern trains running and replacement buses will not be provided, you are advised NOT TO TRAVEL:

  • Manchester Victoria - Clitheroe

  • Manchester Victoria - Chester

  • Lancaster - Morecambe / Heysham Port

  • Preston - Colne

  • Wigan North Western - Stalybridge (via Manchester Victoria)

  • Manchester Piccadilly - Stoke-on-Trent / Crewe

Alternative travel options:

Customers travelling between Lancaster and Morecambe / Heysham Port can use their ticket on services between Leeds and Morecambe, as these trains are able to run.

Customers may use their Northern ticket on the following:

  • Transport for Wales between Manchester stations and Chester in both directions

  • East Midlands Railway services between Manchester stations and Liverpool Lime Street in both directions

  • TransPennine Express services (Northern cancelled services only)


If your train is cancelled, you can claim a full refund, (provided your ticket was purchased through Northern), on the Northern website. Customers who did not purchase their tickets from Northern can return their unused tickets to the original point of purchase.

Check before you travel:

The National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner is not yet showing correctly for Sunday 14 July, please check back closer to the time of travel.

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
