Changes to train times

'Airport by Airport' Train Travel Guide during Christmas and New Year

During the Christmas and New Year holiday period, many thousands of people will be travelling to and from Britain's main airports.

Many of us from here in the UK will be going abroad on holiday, or visiting relatives and friends...

...and we will be welcoming visitors from overseas who will be joining us here in England, Wales and Scotland for the festive period.

For many travellers, your preferred travel connection choice to get to and from the airport is by train. The four biggest airports in Britain each have a nearby railway station, providing a convenient, fast, comfortable and hassle-free connection to where you need to be.

However, Christmas and New Year is a time when the rail network can be disrupted. The purpose of this Airport by Airport Guide is to highlight days where you may have difficulty travelling by rail, so you can consider making alternative arrangements.

Heathrow Airport

There will be major engineering work taking place that will impact your journey to and from Heathrow Airport over the holiday period. The two train operators between Heathrow Airport and central London (Heathrow Express and TfL Rail) will both be affected:

From Tuesday 24 December to  Friday 27 December inclusive there will be NO TRAIN SERVICE on Heathrow Express or TfL Rail. So you will need to make alternative arrangements to travel between Heathrow Airport and central London.

From Saturday 28 December to Tuesday 31 December inclusive, an AMENDED Heathrow Express and TfL Rail service will operate. Just allow a little bit more time to make your train journey.

Heathrow Express and TfL Rail services will run on New Years Day, Wednesday 1 January 2020.

The Heathrow Airport website is available here.

Gatwick Airport

Four train operators run trains to and from Gatwick Airport:

  • Gatwick Express: 'Fast' trains between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria.
  • Thameslink: Trains between Brighton, Gatwick Airport, central London and destinations north of London.
  • Southern: 'Stopping' trains between Gatwick Airport and south coast destinations, and between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria.
  • Great Western Railway: Trains between Gatwick Airport and Reading (not through central London).

No significant engineering work is planned to affect trains to and from Gatwick Airport over the holiday period. But there are some changes to note:

Tuesday 24 December, train services will end earlier than usual that evening. If you need to get to or from Gatwick Airport after 13:00 that day, please check the journey planner to make sure there is a suitable train connection.

Wednesday 25 December, Christmas Day, there are NO TRAIN SERVICES to or from Gatwick Airport.

Thursday 26 December, Boxing Day, there will be a special Southern service between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges / Brighton. There will be NO SERVICE operated by Gatwick Express, Thameslink or Great Western Railway.

Friday 27 December to Monday 30 December inclusive. Great Western Railway trains will be replaced by buses between Gatwick Airport and North Camp. The buses will connect with trains to and from Reading. This is due to engineering work at Guildford.

On all other days during the festive period, the train operators will be running an amended train service.

The Gatwick Airport website is available here.

Manchester Airport

Three train operators run trains to and from Manchester Airport: TransPennine Express, Northern and Transport For Wales.
