Timetable Changes

You can find out about any changes to the published National Rail timetable here

The National Rail Timetable is changed twice a year, in May and December.

The current timetable started on Sunday 18 May 2025 and will operate until Saturday 13 December 2025.

Planned timetables are subject to change, so please use the Journey Planner to check for the most up-to-date information before you travel, or see Upcoming Timetable Changes below for details of specific train companies. You can also check the Timetable Information page for details of any changes to when timetable information will be available.

For more information, including how to create and save your own custom timetables, see our Timetables page.

Published Timetable of the Day

National Rail operates a Published Timetable of the Day, which gives the schedule of passenger services (including rail replacement services) on the day you plan to travel. This is different from the existing May or December timetable. The Published Timetable of the Day will be available no later than 22:00 on the day before the changes happen. All changes will be reflected in the Journey Planner and on the Live Trains page, the places where you will always find the most up-to-date timetable information.

More services have been added on the routes between London and Liverpool, Birmingham and North Wales, as well as between Birmingham and Glasgow. These additional services are coming in thanks to the continued rollout of the new Evero trains and the progression of their driver training programme.

A few small changes will be made to some departure times and calling patterns, but there are no other major changes to the timetable.

A copy of the Avanti West Coast scheduled timetable book from 18 May 2025 onwards is available to download from the Avanti West Coast website.

Chiltern Railways

The Chiltern Railways May 2025 timetable has few changes, when compared to the previous timetable. A small number of services have had their times changed by a few minutes with the aim of improving overall punctuality.

The biggest set of changes are on Saturdays with the introduction of three new trains in the timetable aimed at relieving the pressure on the heavily used Birmingham line trains.

From Sunday 18 May 2025, the following alterations to Chiltern Railways services will apply:

Weekdays:

From Tuesday - Thursday only:

The 06:38 Oxford to London Marylebone service will now be making an open call at High Wycombe at 07:26 – previously this train was set down only. This train will now appear in online journey planners, and will show on station departure screens at High Wycombe.

Saturdays:

There will be an introduction of three new trains in the timetable aimed at relieving the pressure on the heavily used Birmingham line trains.

The three additional trains are the 09:46 Banbury to London Marylebone service, the 10:13 Banbury to London Marylebone service, and the 17:37 London Marylebone to Banbury service.

The 09:46 Banbury to London Marylebone service will call at Bicester North, Haddenham & Thame Parkway and High Wycombe on its way to London, and is aimed at relieving the 08:19 Stourbridge Junction to London Marylebone service, which will no longer call at either Bicester North or Haddenham & Thame Parkway.

The 10:13 Banbury to London Marylebone service will call at Kings Sutton, Bicester North, Haddenham & Thame Parkway, High Wycombe, Gerrards Cross, Denham and Wembley Stadium on its way to London, and is aimed at relieving the 09:13 Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone service, which will no longer call at Kings Sutton, Bicester North or Haddenham & Thame Parkway, and will run non-stop from Banbury to London.

As a result of the 10:13 Banbury to London Marylebone service running, the 10:15 Oxford to London Marylebone service will no longer call at Gerrards Cross, Denham or Wembley Stadium. This means that after leaving High Wycombe, it will call at Beaconsfield and Seer Green & Jordans only, before running non-stop to London. The local Aylesbury to London Marylebone train will preserve the connectivity between Beaconsfield and intermediate stations to London. The changes mean that customers at Seer Green & Jordans will see the 11:10 departure to London running non-stop.

The 17:37 London Marylebone to Banbury service will run non-stop from London to Beaconsfield, which means that the Beaconsfield call comes out of the slightly off pattern 17:46 London Marylebone to Oxford service.

The 22:21 Birmingham Moor Street to Banbury service will be lengthened from a two carriage train to a five carriage train.

ScotRail

ScotRail is set to introduce significant timetable improvements from Sunday 18 May 2025, with a major focus on enhancing rail connections for Fife.

The new timetable will include more frequent services to and from Leven, improving access to and from Edinburgh, and better connecting communities throughout Fife. Additional carriages are also being added to some trains at the busiest times to provide more seats for customers.

Changes to the departure time of some early morning services in the Highlands will provide a more balanced range of travel options for customers travelling from the Kyle of Lochalsh and Tain areas. A late-night service to Tain will also be reintroduced as a trial, as well as a new direct early morning service from Inverness to Edinburgh.

Key highlights of the May 2025 timetable include:

  • More frequent Leven services: Customers in Leven will benefit from an enhanced service frequency, with two trains per hour throughout the day. The second train per hour operates via Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath, providing better connections for communities across Fife

  • Better connections to Dundee: The new timetable creates more journey opportunities for customers who wish to travel from Leven to Dundee. A change in train times means tight connections at Kirkcaldy are minimised, resulting in an improved journey experience

  • Late-night service to Tain: The late-night service from Inverness to Tain, which operated prior to the pandemic is being reintroduced as a trial, offering greater flexibility for evening travellers. The change is possible through reducing the number of underused morning peak services from Elgin to Inverness

  • Direct morning service from Inverness to Edinburgh: A new morning service will connect Inverness directly to Edinburgh, providing a convenient travel option for morning commuters, tourists, business, and leisure travellers. The new service replaces an Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street train

Customers travelling between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central will also benefit from the reintroduction of rail services following the completion of the latest phase of major modernisation works along the route.

While most of the other changes across the network are minor, customers are encouraged to check your journey as train times may have changed.
