Some tickets may require you to travel at specific times of the day, days of the week or on a specific route. Our Journey Planner takes ticket restrictions into account with the selection that you have made and will only have shown tickets that are valid for the selected trains.

  • Reading after 04:29 and before 10:30 and after 15:29 and before 19:01.

  • Slough after 02:29 and before 09:40 and after 14:50 and before 18:25.

  • London Waterloo after 04:29 and before 08:15 and after 15:59 and before 19:01;

  • Birmingham New Street after 04:29 and before 10:30.

Not valid on trains timed to arrive at:

  • Exeter St Davids after 04:59 and before 11:30

  • Salisbury before 09:30 and after 17:40 and before 19:01.

Return Travel

Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before the times shown from the following stations:

  • 09:00 from Ashchurch for Tewkesbury

  • 09:40  from Avoncliff (if travel is via Bath Spa, the restriction time shown for Bath Spa also applies for journeys eastbound from this station);

  • 10:00 from Bath Spa;

Validity code 2W applies to all journeys via Newbury or Didcot Parkway, not passing through Reading.

Validity Code Q8 applies to all journeys via Fareham / Southampton / Salisbury.

Validity Codes 2C / 9I (restrictions listed as From/via Euston) apply from Swindon, Pewsey, Westbury and Castle Cary for travel via London Euston to destinations beyond Milton Keynes.

Validity Codes CI / CJ apply to all journeys via London St Pancras International.

Easement

If travelling on the Great Western Railway 'Night Riviera' sleeper service in the westbound direction, customers may continue their journey after alighting from the sleeper in the morning without further restriction.

Seasonal Variations

GWR Christmas and New Year Travel Restrictions 2023/24 Up to and including Thu 22 December : Normal ticket restrictions apply. Fri 22 December: Off-Peak tickets valid all day. Super Off-Peak tickets subject to normal restriction times.

Sat 23 December to Mon 01 January * No ticket restrictions apply. Tue 02 January 2024 onwards Normal ticket restrictions apply. Journey planners have been updated with the above information. *Please note this only applies to journeys priced by GWR. Flows within Wales, between Cheltenham and Gloucester and long-distance routes to areas not served by GWR are priced by other Train companies, who may have different Christmas travel restrictions in place.
