Known for its Bonfire Night celebrations and the Lewes Pound, the town is famous for its independent spirit. A busy commuter and tourist hub for services to London and the East Coast, Lewes has a lot to offer by way of history, culture and beautiful scenery and is worth taking a trip to, or detour for.
For those who want a bit of history, Lewes Castle is a medieval castle overlooking the town and rewarding those who manage the steep climb to the top with spectacular views. Barbican House Museum can be found next door and digs into the archaeological history of the county of Sussex. There are several buildings that have been left seemingly untouched by time, including Anne of Cleeves Tudor House also within close proximity to the castle.
Shopping in Lewes goes beyond retail therapy, with the community being big supporters of independent businesses and buying local to support their own economy, reducing their carbon footprint in the process. Their local currency, the Lewes pound, helps do just that and can be purchased in several places around the town.
You won’t be short of finding something to eat or drink in Lewes. Beautiful historical pubs allow you to take in the atmosphere of a time gone by, while markets, local bakeries, eateries and restaurants take pride in using produce grown on local farms.
