Coventry, apart from being a connecting town for Birmingham and Watford, is an ancient city chock-full of history and ravaged by war.
Despite having been blitzed during World War II, a handful of medieval buildings have miraculously survived, offering a glimpse into the past and hope for the city’s future.
For history buffs and those who are interested in the earlier history of the city before the German bombings, St Mary’s Guildhall is a magnificent building that once hosted and, even imprisoned, English royalty and other prominent figures. Built in the 1300s, it is home to a number of historic treasures. Don’t miss the cafe below the guildhall for a spot of afternoon tea.
Coventry Cathedral is a modern architectural building, constructed in the 20th century, next to the ruins of St Michael’s Cathedral, which was built in 1300 and destroyed during the blitz. For a great view of the city, climb the 180 steps of the Gothic spire.
After climbing and descending the steps, there are plenty of places to eat, with a range of cuisines to suit all budgets available nearby, so you can grab a bite.
