York is a cathedral city in North Yorkshire founded by Romans in 71AD and raided by Vikings in 866. It became a major wool trading centre in the middle ages and then a hub of the railway network and confectionery manufacturing centre between the 19th and 20th century, which has become part of the city’s identity.
York Minster is the jewel in the city’s crown, with the church of England cathedral decorated with fine examples of medieval stained glass and interactive galleries telling the story of the cathedral, its people, and the significance of some of its artefacts. If you can muster a 275 step climb, the Central Tower takes you to the highest point of the city where you will be rewarded with stunning views.
You can explore all aspects of York’s history from its Roman to Viking roots through its number of museums and attractions. Yorkshire Museum and Gardens is the perfect place to start with its collection of archaeological finds, ancient artefacts and medieval treasures found in the city and around the world. York is also proud of its rail and confectionery history, both of which have their own dedicated museums, National Rail Museum and York’s Chocolate Story.
Shopping in York offers a unique experience with different shopping areas, each with its own speciality. For high street shopping visit Coppergate, Parliament and Coney Street, for those who love to wander Stonegate and Swinegate have various shops among stunning medieval and Georgian architecture.
