Your time on the train isn’t just about getting there – it’s a chance to get ahead. Whether it’s replying to emails, planning your week, or ticking off the items on your to-do list, using your travel time productively means you can free up more space in your day for the things that matter most: spending time with loved ones, pursuing personal goals, or simply relaxing at your destination.

We’ve partnered with productivity expert Clare Evans to share practical tips that fit around real-life schedules, so you can feel the calm and control from getting things done. 7 expert tips to get ahead on your travels

Find out how to turn everyday moments, like train journeys, into opportunities for productivity, with these recommendations from productivity expert Clare Evans.

1. Plan Ahead

If you know you have a long train journey, plan what tasks you can complete while you’re effectively ‘away from the office’ or use the time to work on life admin– book an appointment, organise your finances or write that birthday card.

2. Create your portable office

Enjoy the calm of feeling prepared for every eventuality – spare charger, power cable, hotspot device, pen, notepad.

3. Commit part of your journey time to doing something productive

Sorting out life admin, planning your day, reviewing the week. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes to cross a task off your list. Enjoy the feelings of accomplishment, confident in the knowledge that your to-do list has shortened.

4. Set a time limit

Give yourself a challenge to complete a task you’ve been putting off. Either between stations (on a longer journey) or for all or part of the journey. You’ll be surprised how energising it can feel to tick something off your to-do list!

5. Use the journey as your transition to or from work (if commuting)

Set yourself up for a productive day by planning and organising your priorities in the morning. On your way home, let the journey mark the end of your working day, giving yourself space to unwind with a book or some music, shifting to a more relaxed frame of mind for the evening.

6. Learn something new

Complete an online course, learn a language or read up on a topic of interest. If you struggle with finding enough time in your day for new interests, the daily commute could be just the time you need.

7. Strike a balance

Spend part of your travel time on productive tasks and part on recharging after a busy day. You don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time and it’s good to blend productivity with moments of rest.
