We’re celebrating 200 years of the railway

2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. Railway 200 is a year-long celebration of all things rail – and you’re invited!

What is Railway 200?

2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. Railway 200(external link, opens in a new tab) is a campaign to celebrate this milestone, inspire new generations of talent, and show the part rail can play in a sustainable future.

The winner of the nation’s favourite railway artwork is revealed!

Train Landscape by Eric Ravilious was voted the best-loved railway artwork in the UK, in a poll by Railway 200 and Art UK to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway.

The painting was crowned the winner from a selection of 20 of the best-loved artworks featuring the UK railway, chosen by the public from a longlist of 200 selected by Art UK(external link, opens in a new tab).

Throughout the year, there will be hundreds of events and activities taking place.

If you have a Great Rail Tale, where something funny, important or moving has happened to you in connection with the railway, you can submit it to Railway 200 who will be creating a podcast to celebrate these life-changing events.

Hop on board the Inspiration train

The incredible touring train, Inspiration, will be visiting locations across Great Britain, starting on Friday 27 June. Curated in partnership with the National Railway Museum, Inspiration’s exhibition carriages are:

  • Railway Firsts: showcasing groundbreaking innovations in railway history

  • Wonderlab on Wheels: offering engaging hands-on activities to explore the science and engineering behind railways

  • Your Railway Future: uncovering some of the more hidden roles in rail and encouraging people to consider a career in rail to shape the next 200 years
