Route(s) affected

Between Portsmouth Harbour / Bognor Regis and Horsham, and also between Portsmouth Harbour / Bognor Regis and London Victoria

Description

A failure of the electricity supply between Arundel and Horsham means the line towards Horsham and London is blocked. As a result of this, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Disruption is expected until 23:00.

Customer advice:

If you are travelling between Arundel and Horsham, please allow at least an extra 30 to 45 minutes to complete your journey, and be prepared to use an alternative route.

Northbound trains are currently unable to run from Arundel towards Horsham while Network Rail carry out urgent repairs to the power supply system between Billingshurst and Christs Hospital.

Southbound services running from Horsham towards Arundel and the coast are not directly blocked, but remain subject to residual delays.

Changes to services:

Northbound services from Bognor Regis and Portsmouth towards London Victoria: Services scheduled to run via Arundel and Horsham will be diverted via Hove and Worthing to Three Bridges (running non-stop after Barnham). Diverted trains will then continue their scheduled journeys towards London. This diversion will increase journey times by at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Until repairs are complete and the power supply is restored, northbound trains towards London cannot call at:

  • Arundel

  • Amberley

  • Pulborough

  • Billinghurst

  • Christs Hospital

Travelling to one of these stations from the South Coast?

Southbound trains from London / Horsham are still able to call at these stations. If you are on a diverted train, you will need to travel through to Three Bridges or Horsham and change there for a southbound service back down the Arun Valley.

Travelling from these stations towards London?

Please board a southbound train towards Barnham, where you can connect with diverted London-bound services via Three Bridges.

If you are at a station with no remaining train departures or connections, please speak to station staff where present, press the emergency / information button on the station Help Point, or contact Southern on social media so control teams can assist with alternative road transport.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

Earlier this evening, Network Rail reported a power supply failure affecting the conductor rail equipment between Billingshurst and Christs Hospital.

Without sufficient traction power on the northbound line, electric passenger trains cannot run safely through this section. Specialist electrical track engineers are on site working to isolate the fault and restore power.

To maintain connections while repairs take place, northbound services have been diverted via the coastal route through Worthing and Three Bridges, while southbound services continue to operate through the unaffected line.
