Description

An object caught in the overhead line equipment in the Carnforth area means that all lines are blocked. As a result, trains running between Lancaster and Oxenholme Lake District may be delayed by up to 50 minutes, cancelled or revised.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Avanti West Coast customer advice:

Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the following services:

  • TransPennine Express trains until further notice:

    • between Preston and Edinburgh in both directions

    • between Preston and Glasgow Central in both directions

If your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.

If you no longer wish to travel because your train's delayed or cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket.

How does this affect my journey?

Train services are unable to run between Lancaster and Carnforth (in both directions).

Services on the following routes may be affected by this disruption:

  • Between Barrow in Furness and Preston

  • Between Windermere and Preston

  • Between Leeds and Morecambe

  • Between Lancaster and Morecambe

Northern services between Lancaster and Morecambe are not affected.

What should I do?

You can travel on the next Northern service to your destination, where available.

Please note that other train operators may also be affected by disruption – please check your whole journey before travelling.

Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.

Replacement transport:

Road transport has requested to operate between Lancaster and Windermere, further information will be posted once operator details have been confirmed.

Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (except for service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport.

Journey times may be extended by up to 90 minutes whilst travelling by road transport.

  • Manchester Airport-Glasgow Central

  • Manchester Airport-Edinburgh

  • Liverpool Lime Street-Glasgow Central

Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central / Edinburgh services will only run between:

  • Manchester Airport and Preston

  • Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

What should I do?

TransPennine Express are currently looking into options to keep you on the move. If your train is cancelled or delayed, you may wish to postpone your journey until trains are running again or until alternative travel options are available.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

  • Northern services between Manchester Airport / Liverpool Lime Street and Preston

  • Alternative TransPennine Express services between Manchester Airport and Preston


When the line re-opens you can travel at no extra cost on the following services:

  • Avanti West Coast services between Preston and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

  • Alternative TransPennine Express services between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

Rail replacement transport has been requested to operate between Preston and Carlisle in both directions calling at all booked stops until 19:00, please see station staff for further information on pick up points.
