Description

A person has been hit by a train in the Ely area. Whilst the emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed. Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

Major disruption is expected until 18:00.

Advice for East Midlands Railway customers:

You should continue to travel as originally planned however your journey may be delayed by 45 minutes.

You can travel on the following services, at no extra cost:

If you are travelling from Norwich to Ely

You can use your ticket on Greater Anglia services from Norwich to Thetford and then from there connect on a rail replacement bus from Thetford to Ely.

If you are travelling beyond Ely

You can use your ticket on Greater Anglia services via Stowmarket and then connect onto Thameslink services towards Stevenage.

You can then use your tickets on LNER services to travel to Peterborough and Grantham.

If you are travelling to / from Peterborough

You can use your tickets to travel to Leicester and then connect onto our EMR Intercity services towards Nottingham/ Sheffield.

If you are travelling from Peterborough toward Norwich then please use the same as above as this will be in both directions.

You can also use your tickets to travel between London Kings Cross and Grantham with LNER.

Replacement buses are being arranged to keep you on the move between Ely and Norwich and Ely and Peterborough.

If you hold an ‘Advance Ticket’ which is usually valid on a specific train you may use it to travel on any East Midlands Railway trains on this route.

If you are travelling around London

You can use your tickets to travel between London Kings Cross and Grantham with LNER

You can use your tickets to travel from Norwich to London Liverpool Street and also between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street with Greater Anglia.

You can use London Underground between London Liverpool Street/ London St Pancras International and London Kings Cross.

Advice for CrossCountry customers:

Your ticket will be accepted at no additional cost on the below:

  • The two CrossCountry services operating before and after your cancelled service

  • Thameslink services between Peterborough and Hitchin connecting in to Great Northern services between Hitchin and Cambridge

  • East Midlands Railway services between Ely and Peterborough

  • Greater Anglia services between Ely and Stansted Airport

Passengers going in and out of London can also use the following services:

  • All London Underground terminals

  • East Midlands Railway services between Leicester and London St Pancras International (both ways)

  • Greater Anglia services between Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street (both ways)

  • Thameslink services between Peterborough and London St Pancras International (both ways)

  • LNER services between Peterborough and London Kings Cross (both ways)

  • Avanti West Coast services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston (both ways)

  • London North Western Railway services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston (both ways)

  • Great Northern services between Ely and London Kings Cross


If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost

Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but Coach B, H and L are our unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

Advice for Greater Anglia customers:

Trains are unable to run between Thetford and Cambridge North.

Trains between Ipswich and Peterborough have been suspended.

Alternative travel options:

Please allow plenty of time to make your journey.

Travel advice between Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and Peterborough

Firstly, you are advised to travel to Cambridge where you can change for a Thameslink service to Stevenage. From Stevenage you can board a train to Peterborough.

Travel advice between Stowmarket, Ipswich and Peterborough

Firstly, you are advised to travel to London Liverpool Street where you can change for the London Underground Circle, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan line to King's Cross St. Pancras. From here, you can change for a Thameslink service from London St Pancras International to Peterborough. Alternatively, you can use LNER trains from London Kings Cross to Peterborough.

If you are going to travel with LNER, it is recommended you book a seat reservation.

Accessible replacement buses will be running between Thetford and Cambridge North from 12:45. This journey takes approximately 2 hours.

You can use your ticket on any of the above, as well as replacement buses arranged by East Midlands Railway.

You can also use your ticket on A2B route 9 between Ely and Cambridge.

Advance purchase tickets holders will be allowed to travel on earlier or later trains if their booked service is cancelled.

Advice for Great Northern customers:

All lines are closed between Cambridge and Kings Lynn. We are not able to provide an estimate for when lines will reopen.

As a result, the following stations currently have no Great Northern service:

  • Cambridge North

  • Waterbeach

  • Ely

  • Littleport

  • Downham Market

  • Watlington

  • Kings Lynn

You are strongly advised to delay journeys between these stations until later. If you do travel now, you will need to use an alternative route, and should allow at least 60 minutes extra to complete your journey.

While services are running between Cambridge and London, services may be delayed, or subject to alterations, and you should check before you travel.

  • Thameslink and Great Northern services between London stations, Cambridge, and Ely

  • Greater Anglia services between London Liverpool Street, Cambridge, and Ely

  • CrossCountry services between Cambridge, Ely, and Peterborough

  • London Underground services between London terminals

Replacement buses

A limited number of replacement buses are running between Cambridge, Ely and Kings Lynn.

These are running under the instruction of station staff. As we currently have a limited number of replacement buses running, you may not be able to travel on the first bus that calls at your station, and you should continue to leave significant additional time to complete your journey.
