Disruption is expected until 19:00.

Great Northern / Thameslink customer advice:

Some Thameslink and Great Northern services that are travelling towards London may see increased journey times added to their journey as they travel through the Hitchin area.

Trains are having to move onto different running lines in order to pass through a section of the railway between Hitchin and Stevenage which means some services will pick up extra time.

There may be some short notice service alterations which will impact the below services:

  • Great Northern services that run between Cambridge North and London Kings Cross may have ad hoc cancellations which will could result in an hourly service so please check your train ahead of travelling

Can you tell me more about the incident?

This part of the network uses axle counters to detect trains by tracking their wheels. If one fails, the system may think a train is still there, preventing others from moving forward. This has now been fixed and trains are working to get back to timetable

Drivers must stop at red signals and get verbal permission to proceed at a reduced speed, which can cause delays, especially in areas with long track sections.

Network Rail engineers are investigating this and will aim to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

LNER customer advice:

Buses will run in place of cancelled services between Newark Northgate and Lincoln.

Check before you travel:

You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.
