No trains between Newport (South Wales) and Cardiff Central: major disruption expected until the end of the day

Transport for Wales between Manchester Piccadilly and Pembroke Dock / Milford Haven / Fishguard Harbour, and between Holyhead / Chester / Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central, and also between Newport (South Wales) and Ebbw Vale Town

Description

A fire next to the track between Newport (South Wales) and Cardiff Central means all lines are closed. The severity of the fire has affected signalling and the the overhead electricity power.

Trains are currently unable to run between these stations and will be cancelled, revised or heavily delayed awaiting the lines reopening.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Great Western Railway are strongly advising you do not travel between Bristol stations and Cardiff Central, and Transport for Wales are strongly advising you do not travel between Newport and Cardiff Central.

Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the following services:

• The two CrossCountry operating before and after your cancelled service

• Transport for Wales between Cheltenham Spa and Newport (and to / from Cardiff Central once lines reopen) - please note trains on this route will be affected by this disruption

CrossCountry have been unable to source road transport. Customers who are unable to continue their journey within two hours without any alternative options provided may request taxis cost reimbursements from the CrossCountry relations team. This can be done through their website.

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost

Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but Coach B, H and L are the unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

Great Western Railway customer advice:

All trains between Bristol Parkway, Newport and Cardiff Central are currently suspended. Great Western Railway request that you do not travel from either Bristol Parkway or Bristol Temple Meads to Newport and Cardiff Central for the rest of today as they cannot provide a rail service.

For those currently travelling, your ticket can be used at no extra cost (in both directions) on the following local bus routes:

• First Buses (Cymru) route 84: Port Talbot Parkway (Station), Swansea (Bus Station

• First Buses (Cymru) route 87: Port Talbot Parkway (Station), Neath (Bus Station)

• First Buses (Cymru) route X1: Swansea (Bus Station), Port Talbot Parkway (Station), Bridgend (Bus Station)

• First Buses (Cymru) route X2: Cardiff (Wood Street), Bridgend (Bus Station)

• First Buses (Cymru) route X5: Swansea (Bus Station), Neath (Bus Station)

• First Buses (Cymru) route X7: Swansea (Bus Station), Neath (Bus Station)

If you are travelling to Southampton and Portsmouth, then you can use your ticket via Reading, on to Basingstoke and then take a South Western Railway service at no extra cost. This is available in both directions.

Additionally, if your train is cancelled, you may travel on either of the two services before, or two services after, your original train. If these are peak services or less flexible, you can still travel with your original ticket, at no extra cost.

Transport for Wales customer advice:

Trains running between Ebbw Vale Town and Newport / Cardiff are also affected by this disruption.

Transport for Wales strongly advise customers to not attempt to travel between Newport and Cardiff in both directions. You cannot travel by train - there are no trains running.

A very limited number of rail replacement buses are running between Newport and Cardiff. Please note these are expected to be busy and journey times will be extended.

For those currently travelling, your ticket can be used at no extra cost (in both directions) on the following services:

• CrossCountry between Cheltenham Spa and Newport (and to / from Cardiff Central once lines reopen) - please note trains on this route will be affected by this disruption

• Stagecoach Buses on the following routes:

  • Route X24 between Newport and Pontypool via Cwmbran

  • Route 21 and X3 between Cwmbran and Pontypool

  • Route 23 between Cwmbran and Hereford via Abergavenny

  • Route X5 between Cardiff and Cwmbran
