Description

The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Preston and Wigan North Western, resulting in all lines being blocked. Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

Disruption is expected until 11:15.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following:

  • CrossCountry services between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street

  • Northern services between:

    • Preston and Manchester Piccadilly

    • Wigan Wallgate and Manchester Piccadilly

    • Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street

  • TransPennine Express services between Preston and Manchester Piccadilly

If your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.

If you no longer wish to travel because your train is delayed or cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket.

How does this affect my journey?

Train services are unable to run between Preston and Wigan North Western (in both directions).

Services between Blackpool North and Wigan North Western / Liverpool Lime Street will be affected by this disruption and will start and terminate at Wigan North Western.

Northern services between Blackpool North and Preston are not affected.

Northern services between Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street are not affected.

Stations between Preston and Wigan North Western cannot be served.

What should I do?

You can travel on the next Northern service to your destination, where available.

Please note that other train operators may also be affected by disruption – please check your whole journey before travelling.

Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.

Replacement transport:

To assist customers to complete their journey, road replacement transport will be provided at no extra cost as follows:

  • A coach operated by S Line will depart Preston at 08:30 calling at stations to Wigan North Western

  • A coach operated by Bestway will depart Wigan North Western at 08:30 calling at stations to Preston

Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (excluding service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport. Journey times will be extended by up to 60 minutes when using road replacement transport.

TransPennine Express customer advice:

TransPennine Express services are unable to run between Liverpool Lime Street and Preston, in both directions. This affects the following TransPennine Express routes:

  • Between Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central, in both directions.

Please be aware, that TransPennine Express services between Liverpool Lime Street and Preston / Glasgow are already disrupted due to more trains needing maintenance than normal. TransPennine Express are looking at further services, which are scheduled to run later this morning, which may be affected as a result of this disruption.

What should I do?

TransPennine Express are currently recommending that you continue your journey via Manchester where you can change for TransPennine Express services towards and Preston and Glasgow Central.

You can use your tickets at no extra cost on the following services, at no extra cost:

  • TransPennine Express and Northern services between Liverpool and Manchester, where you can change for TransPennine Express services towards and Preston and Glasgow Central

  • Northern services between Wigan Wallgate and Bolton/Manchester (It is just a short distance across the road from Wigan North Western to Wigan Wallgate)

  • Metrolink services between Manchester Victoria, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport

Please note that other train operators may also be experiencing disruption today.
