Description

There is a safety inspection of the track taking place between Gatwick Airport and Redhill, meaning some lines towards Redhill are currently blocked. Train services running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Disruption is expected until 19:00.

You may use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

• Southern and Thameslink: between Redhill and Gatwick Airport (please note these train companies are also affected by this disruption)

If your train is cancelled, you may travel on either of the two services before, or two services after, your original train. If these are peak services or less flexible, you can still travel with your original ticket, at no extra cost.

Southern and Thameslink customer advice:

If you are travelling to or from Salfords or Earlswood (Surrey), you may need to use an alternative route and allow an extra 30 minutes to complete your journey.

Trains towards London cannot call at Salfords and Earlswood (Surrey) at present.

If you are travelling on a train towards London (Bedford services), and you want to alight at one of these stops, please continue to Redhill and change there for a service in the opposite direction.

If you are travelling from these stations towards London, please travel in the opposite direction to Horley first, and change for a train to your destination.

For some of these stations, alternative public transport options are also available. You may find these quicker for some journeys, although it will still take longer to get to your destination. Local Metrobus 100 services running between Gatwick Airport, Horley, Salfords, Earlswood (Surrey), and Redhill are also available and may offer a more direct connection for your journey.

While this incident is ongoing, to prevent congestion in the area, Gatwick Express services will be suspended. If you are travelling to or from Gatwick Airport tickets will be accepted on alternative Southern or Thameslink services between London and Gatwick Airport.

Network Rail have been notified of a potential defect with the track between Salfords and Earlswood (Surrey) on the London-bound stopping line.

When a possible fault is reported by a driver or detected by track-monitoring equipment, strict railway safety rules require train drivers to reduce their speed through the affected section until specialist maintenance teams carry out a physical inspection.

Running at slower speeds prevents damage to trains and track equipment, but reduces capacity and causes congestion on this busy stretch of the Brighton Main Line.

Network Rail response engineers are attending the site to inspect the rails and confirm whether any repairs are needed before normal line speeds can be safely restored.
