Description

A broken down train between Manchester Victoria and Salford Crescent / Newton-le-Willows / Manchester Oxford Road means some lines are blocked. As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

Major disruption is expected until 21:00.

Train services are unable to run through Manchester Victoria (in both directions).

Services on the following routes will be affected by this disruption:

  • Between Leeds and Chester

  • Between Leeds and Wigan Wallgate

  • Between Southport and Stalybridge

  • Headbolt Lane and Blackburn

  • Manchester Victoria and Leeds

  • Clitheroe/Blackburn and Rochdale


What should I do?

You should continue your journey using the alternative suggestions below.

You can travel on the following operators and routes at no extra cost:

  • Bee Network Bus services between:

    • Manchester and Wigan, via Bolton/Atherton on routes 601, 602, 607, 608, 609, 8, 10, 35, 36, 37, 132, 126, 583, 516, 38

  • Bee Network Metrolink services between Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester City Centre

  • TransPennine Express services between Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds

Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.

Rail replacement transport:

Road transport will be operated by Bestway as follows:

  • From Manchester Victoria at 19:00, calling at all stations to Hebden Bridge

  • From Manchester Victoria at 19:00, calling at all stations to Wigan Wallgate via Atherton


Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick-up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (except for service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport.

Journey times may be extended by approximately 60 minutes whilst travelling by road transport.

A failed freight train is blocking the line outside of Manchester Victoria. Network Rail staff now on site.

How does this affect my journey?

No trains can run between Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Victoria.

No trains can run between Newton-le-Willows and Manchester Victoria.

The following routes may be delayed, revised, or cancelled:

  • Liverpool Lime Street - Newcastle in both directions

  • Liverpool Lime Street - Manchester Victoria in both directions

  • Manchester Airport - Scarborough in both directions

You should continue to travel as planned, however, your journey will be delayed.

You can use your tickets at no extra cost on the following services:

  • East Midlands Railway services between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street in both directions until 20:15

  • Metrolink services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria in both directions until 20:15

  • Northern services between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge in both directions until 20:15

  • TransPennine Express services between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street in both directions until 20:15
