Description
A tree blocking the railway between Fareham and Southampton Central means that all lines are blocked. As a result, trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes, revised or diverted.
Disruption is expected until 21:00.
A visual disruption map video is available.
Great Western Railway customer advice:
If your train is cancelled, you may travel on either of the two services before, or two services after, your original train. If these are peak services or less flexible, you can still travel with your original ticket, at no extra cost.
South Western Railway customer advice:
South local services
Services between Portsmouth and Southampton Central via Netley are expected to either be cancelled or will be diverted via Eastleigh between Fareham and St Denys. Journey times will take longer than expected. Stations between Swanwick and Bitterne will not be served.
Services from London Waterloo to Southampton Central via Netley will be diverted from Woking to Basingstoke or Southampton Central via Winchester.
Southern and Great Western Railway services between Fareham and Southampton Central will also be affected by this incident.
How do I get to my destination?
You are advised to use local alternatives or speak to station staff who will be able to assist you with your journey.
You should allow extra time to complete your journey and continue to check station boards and website for the latest service updates.
Replacement buses are being arranged between Fareham and Southampton Central. Further details will follow once confirmed.
If you need any help with your journey, please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
If you would prefer to use local buses to continue your journey please check Traveline. South Western Railway tickets are not valid on local buses unless stated above.
Southern customer advice:
This is affecting the routes between Fareham and Southampton Central. If you are travelling between these stations you will need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. Please allow at least 30 minutes longer than usual to complete your journey this evening.
If you're waiting on a train which is delayed between stations:
If your train is delayed between stations, please remain where you are and listen to announcements, or speak to staff for further information. Work is taking place to get you moving as soon as possible. Teams will be doing everything they can to help you continue your journey.
Please don't leave the train unless you are asked to do so. Other trains may still be moving in the area, and the track is also a very hazardous environment. In areas where the trains are powered by an electric third rail, this usually stays live and dangerous during incidents, and looks the same as other rails.
How the service will be altered:
Southern services that normally run to Southampton Central will be diverted to Portsmouth Harbour or Bognor Regis.
The following stations will not be served until further notice:
Swanwick
Woolston
Southampton Central
Work is being undertaken on organising alternative travel options, including ticket acceptance, and will update you as soon as possible.
Please talk to station staff, look at information boards or check your journey planner for the latest information.
Planning your journey:
For help planning your journey, check live departure boards, view a live network map or see alternative route guides.
If you’re travelling within London, you can use the TfL Journey Planner.
Stay up to date on the move with Southern’s WhatsApp channel. Live updates are available Monday to Friday, 07:00–21:00.
Can you tell me more about the incident?
There has been a report of a tree on the railway, and this is now causing some disruption to services. Your train may be held on approach to the area, or it may need to be terminated before it gets to this part of the network.
Network Rail staff will be attending to remove the tree as quickly as they can. Unfortunately, it's not possible to try to run trains past this.
Ticket flexibility:
If your train is cancelled, you will be able to travel on an alternative service operated by any other participating train company, either two hours before or two hours after the original departure time of the cancelled service, in order to reach your destination.
If you decide not to travel or cannot complete your journey due to cancellations, you are entitled to a full refund from your original point of sale.
For further information and guidance please contact your train company or speak to a member of railway staff.
Check before you travel:
You can check your journey using the National Rail real-time Journey Planner.
Compensation:
You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
