Great Western Railway services during Christmas and New Year 2019/20

Please find below a day-by-day summary of the services that Great Western Railway will be running over the Christmas and New Year Bank Holiday period.

Monday 23 December

 

A normal service is expected to run.

Tuesday 24 December

 

An early closedown of services will take place on most routes.

There will be track renewal and replacement of overhead wiring in the Southall area. Trains will be unable to run between London Paddington and Slough/Reading.

  • London Paddington is not available and trains won’t run on the Greenford branch.
  • Long-distance services will be reduced to hourly and most will start/terminate at Reading. However, North Cotswolds services will start/terminate at Slough instead.
  • Trains between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will start/terminate at Swindon instead of London Paddington.
  • Trains between London Paddington and Bedwyn/Newbury will start/terminate at Reading instead of London Paddington.

Rail replacement buses will operate between:

  • Maidenhead, Marlow and High Wycombe to connect with Chiltern Railways services to/from London Marylebone
  • Slough and Hillingdon for Metropolitan/Piccadilly line services
  • Slough and Ealing Broadway for District/Central line services

Wednesday 25 December

 

No service.

Thursday 26 December

 

No service.

Friday 27 December

 

There will be engineering work across the Great Western Railway network, including track renewal and replacement of overhead wiring in the Southall area (no service at London Paddington), track renewal in the Newport area, overhead wiring work at Cardiff Central, bridge strengthening work at Guildford, and in the Salisbury area.

  • London Paddington is not available and trains won’t run on the Greenford branch. Long-distance services will be reduced to hourly and most will start/terminate at Reading. However, North Cotswolds services will start/terminate at Slough instead.
  • Trains between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will start/terminate at Swindon instead of London Paddington.
  • Trains between London Paddington and Bedwyn/Newbury will start/terminate at Reading instead of London Paddington.
  • Trains between Reading and Gatwick Airport/Redhill will start/terminate at Ash instead.

  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Warminster will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central; buses will replace trains between Warminster and Southampton Central, where trains will run to/from Portsmouth Harbour.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Taunton will start/terminate at Bristol Temple Meads instead of Cardiff Central.

Rail replacement buses will operate between:

There will be track renewal between London Paddington and Reading, track renewal in the Newport area, overhead wiring work at Cardiff Central, and bridge strengthening work at Guildford.

  • Trains between London Paddington and Swansea will run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway and then restart from Bridgend.
  • Reduced service between Reading and London Paddington
  • Trains between London Paddington and Bedwyn/Newbury will start/terminate at Reading instead of London Paddington.
  • Trains between Reading and Gatwick Airport/Redhill will start/terminate at Ash instead.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Portsmouth Harbour will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Taunton will start/terminate at Bristol Temple Meads instead of Cardiff Central.

  • Reduced service between Reading and London Paddington

An early closedown of services will take place on most routes. Additional late night services will run between London Paddington and Reading operated by TfL Rail.

There will be track renewal between London Paddington and Reading, track renewal in the Newport area and overhead wiring work at Cardiff Central.

  • Trains between London Paddington and Swansea will run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway and then restart from Cardiff Central.
  • Trains between Reading and London Paddington – reduced service until 13:00 when normal train services will resume.
  • Trains between Greenford and West Ealing/London Paddington will resume at 13:00.
  • Trains between London Paddington and Bedwyn/Newbury will start/terminate at Reading instead of London Paddington.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Portsmouth Harbour will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Taunton will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central.

Rail replacement buses will operate between:

  • Bristol Parkway and Newport (fast, plus calling at Patchway and Severn Tunnel Junction)
  • Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central (fast)
  • Newport and Cardiff Central

Wednesday 1 January 2020

 

The first train services of the day will start later than usual on most routes.

Due to engineering works:

  • Trains between London Paddington and Swansea will run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway and then restart from Cardiff Central.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Portsmouth Harbour will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central.
  • Trains between Cardiff Central and Taunton will start/terminate at Bristol Parkway instead of Cardiff Central.

Rail replacement buses will operate between:

  • Bristol Parkway and Newport (fast, plus calling at Patchway and Severn Tunnel Junction)
  • Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central (fast)
  • Newport and Cardiff Central
