Travel Updates

Easter Travel Summary 2021

Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the Easter holiday period, Good Friday 2 April to Easter Monday 5 April 2021. Major engineering work will be taking place during the holiday period, affecting certain routes. Network Rail carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time as fewer than half the number of people usually travel by train.

Some train companies will also be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

The continuing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic is an extra factor this year, here's a link to our latest Coronavirus Travel Advice.

Major improvement work on your railway this Bank Holiday

The following major engineering and improvement projects will be undertaken at Easter:

London Liverpool Street – Shenfield: No trains will run between these stations, alternative routes and transport will be available. Work is taking place to improve the reliability of the lines, and on preparing for the introduction of Crossrail services.

London Euston - Milton Keynes Central: Reduced service. This is due to HS2 works near London Euston and track improvement work between Tring and Milton Keynes.

London Kings Cross: A reduced timetable will operate. Regular travellers will be aware of the ongoing impact of this major improvement project - more details of the benefits you can expect are available here.

London Waterloo – Windsor / Reading / Twickenham / Richmond: An alternative timetable will be in place. Signalling work is taking place in order to provide a more reliable railway.

Lots of other engineering projects will be taking place across the country, and you can search for the work that may affect your journey by using our Future Engineering Work portal.

Important information regarding timetables

Normally, the timetable for any particular day is confirmed 12 weeks in advance. For a temporary period Network Rail isn’t able to do this, instead confirming engineering work and timetables approximately 6 weeks in advance. This means that for some routes online journey planners, including National Rail Enquiries, may not be completely accurate until 6 weeks before travel.

Where we are aware that the timetable is not yet correct, the National Rail Enquiries journey planner will show a yellow warning triangle against the trains concerned - please check back nearer to your travel date.

We have an information page dedicated to these temporary timetable changes, which will help you decide when to plan your journey. Here's a link to the latest details.
