May Bank Holidays Travel Summary 2021

Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the two Bank Holiday weekends in May 2021:

  • Early May bank holiday from Saturday 1 to Monday 3 May
  • Spring bank holiday from Saturday 29 to Monday 31 May.

To tackle the spread of Coronavirus, the government is urging people to keep their journeys to a minimum. If you are travelling please follow the latest government guidance and the measures set out when travelling by train.

Major engineering work will be taking place during the holiday periods, affecting certain routes. Network Rail carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time as far fewer people usually travel by train.

Some train companies will also be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

The continuing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic may affect your journey plans for May, here's a link to our latest Coronavirus Travel Advice.

Major improvement work on your railway

Early May weekend: The following major engineering and improvement projects will be undertaken during the Early May weekend:

London Euston - Milton Keynes Central: No trains will be able to run on the West Coast Main Line to or from London Euston. This is due to HS2 works near London Euston, maintenance work in the Wembley and Watford areas, and Bletchley Flyover rebuilding work.

London Liverpool Street – Shenfield: No trains will run between these stations, alternative routes and transport will be available. Work is taking place to improve the reliability of the lines, and on preparing for the introduction of Crossrail services.

London Kings Cross: A reduced timetable will operate. Regular travellers will be aware of the ongoing impact of this major improvement project.

London St Pancras International: A reduced timetable will operate. Work is taking place to create space for the new Brent Cross West station.

London Victoria: No Southern services will run to or from London Victoria. Work is taking place to improve signalling and upgrade the track.

Information on these works, and all line closures is also available on our future engineering works page.

Engineering work and timetables

Normally, the timetable for any particular day is confirmed 12 weeks in advance. For a temporary period Network Rail isn’t able to do this, instead confirming engineering work and timetables much closer to the date of travel. This means that for some routes online journey planners, including National Rail Enquiries, may not be completely accurate until a few days before you travel.

Where we are aware that the timetable is not yet correct, the National Rail Enquiries journey planner will show a yellow warning triangle against the trains concerned - please check back nearer to your travel date.

For details of engineering works, and their possible impact on your journey, please continue to check here.
