Late May Bank Holiday Travel Summary 2021

Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the Late May (Spring) Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 29 to Monday 31 May.

Travel with confidence - rail companies are working closely with the Government to keep vital services moving and making sure you can travel safely. If you are travelling please follow the latest government guidance and the measures set out when travelling by train.

All major engineering work taking place during the holiday period has now been completed successfully,.

Avanti West Coast

 

Major improvement work is taking place at London Euston and on the West Coast Main Line through the Spring and Summer this year. This will impact the Late May bank holiday weekend. More details on this significant project can be found here.

Saturday 29 May

Trains will depart London Euston earlier than usual, and arrive at London Euston later than usual. Services between London Euston and Chester / Holyhead will not run between London Euston and Crewe.

From 12:15 onwards, trains between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street, and between London Euston and stations north of Preston, will be diverted via Manchester Piccadilly, and will not run north of Carlisle. Replacement buses will run between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street via Runcorn, between Crewe and Wigan North Western via Warrington Bank Quay, and between Crewe and Preston.

From 08:30 onwards, a very limited number of services will operate between Carlisle and Glasgow Central via an alternative route. Replacement buses will run between Carlisle and Glasgow Central via Lockerbie and Motherwell.

Sunday 30 May

Engineering work is taking place in the London Liverpool Street area. As a result, trains will be diverted to start from / terminate at London Fenchurch Street and will call additionally at West Ham and Limehouse.

Customers travelling to / from Stratford may use tickets on the London Underground Jubilee Line between West Ham and Stratford.

London Liverpool Street station is a short walk away from London Fenchurch Street station.

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

A reduced service will operate, subject to engineering work.

Engineering work is taking place after 20:40 between London Fenchurch Street and Barking, closing all lines.

After 20:40 trains will be diverted to start / terminate at London Liverpool Street.

From 22:45, the above engineering work will extend out to Upminster. After this time, these services will be diverted via an alternative route and will call additionally at Grays. A shuttle service will run between Grays and Upminster and Upminster to Pitsea via Laindon.

Tickets will be accepted on London Underground District Line services between Tower Hill and Barking, and Jubilee Line or Docklands Light Railway services between West Ham and Stratford. Customers for Limehouse can use Docklands Light Railway services between Tower Gateway and Limehouse and Limehouse to Stratford via Poplar.

Caledonian Sleeper

 

Saturday 29 May

No Saturday night service.

Sunday 30 May

Due to engineering work between Edinburgh and Motherwell, the 21:34 London Euston to Glasgow Central service, and the 21:45 Glasgow Central to London Euston service, will be diverted and will not call at Motherwell or Carstairs. 

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

Due to engineering work on the West Coast Main Line, services will be diverted via an alternative route and will be unable to call at Watford Junction, Crewe, Preston or Carlisle.

23:40 Glasgow Central to London Euston service will be diverted, and will not call at Motherwell or Carstairs.

Chiltern Railways

 

Saturday 29 May

From 18:00 until approximately 20:30, trains will not run between London Marylebone and Aylesbury Vale Parkway via Harrow-on-the-Hill. This is due to a late notice closure of the London Underground Metropolitan line. Alternative trains will be available between London Marylebone and Beaconsfield, and replacement buses will run between Beaconsfield and Aylesbury Vale Parkway (calling at interim stations).

A special timetable will operate, in conjunction with the Championship Play Off Final football match at Wembley Stadium.

Sunday 30 May

CrossCountry

 

Saturday 29 May

Engineering work is taking place between Edinburgh and Motherwell resulting in the closure of all lines.

Trains will be diverted between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and will not call at Motherwell. Buses will run between Edinburgh and Motherwell.

Sunday 30 May

Engineering work is taking place between Edinburgh and Motherwell resulting in the closure of all lines. Trains will be diverted between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and will not call at Motherwell. Buses will run between Edinburgh and Motherwell.

Due to engineering work at Leeds, trains will be slightly retimed arriving at, and departing from Leeds station.

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

Engineering work is taking place between Edinburgh and Motherwell resulting in the closure of all lines.

Trains will be diverted between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and will not call at Motherwell. Buses will run between Edinburgh and Motherwell.

East Midlands Railway

 

Throughout the bank holiday weekend, the railway lines will be closed between Luton and London St Pancras International. No trains will be able to run on this section of line as a result. This engineering work is vital to the success of the Brent Cross project, which will see a new station built between Hendon and Cricklewood. The line will be closed between Luton and London St Pancras International due to engineering work.

Trains will run between Leeds / Sheffield / Derby / Nottingham / Leicester / Corby and Luton to a reduced and amended timetable. Buses will run between Luton and Stanmore (London Underground) station. You can use London Underground services between Stanmore and Central London.

Gatwick Express

 

Gatwick Express services are currently suspended due to the Coronavirus emergency.

This is because of a significant reduction in passengers at the airport, and to help keep other trains running for essential journeys. Southern and Thameslink are still running to and from Gatwick Airport, and will provide journey options to both London and Brighton.

Grand Central

Great Northern

 

Saturday 29 May

No engineering work is planned.

Until approximately 08:45, no Great Northern or Thameslink trains will run between London Kings Cross and Finsbury Park. This is due to engineering work. You can use your tickets on London Underground services.

Until approximately 08:30, buses will replace trains between Stevenage and Royston / Peterborough. This is due to engineering work.

Great Western Railway

 

Saturday 29 May

Overnight engineering work is taking place between Southall and London Paddington. As a result, the 23:45 Didcot Parkway to London Paddington service will terminate at Slough. A replacement bus will run from Slough to London Paddington.

Overnight engineering work is taking place on the line to Gatwick Airport. As a result, the 23:34 Reading to Gatwick Airport service will terminate at Redhill. A bus will run from Redhill to Gatwick Airport.

Engineering work is taking place in the Worcester area. As a result:

Hereford / Great Malvern / Worcester - London Paddington route:

  • Trains will run between Moreton-in-Marsh and London Paddington only. 
  • You can use West Midlands Railway services between Hereford and Worcester Foregate Street.
  • Road transport will operate between Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcestershire Parkway, Pershore, Evesham, Honeybourne and Moreton-in-Marsh.

Great Malvern - Bristol Temple Meads route:

  • Trains will run between Gloucester and Bristol Temple Meads only
  • Buses will replace trains between Great Malvern and Gloucester.

         

Sunday 30 May

Engineering work is taking place in the Worcester area. As a result:

Hereford / Great Malvern / Worcester - London Paddington route:

Engineering work is taking place between Salisbury and Westbury. Buses will replace trains between Salisbury and Westbury, and also between Dilton Marsh and Westbury. No trains will run to or from Brighton, you can use alternative services.

Engineering work is taking place between Yeovil Pen Mill and Dorchester West. Buses will replace trains between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth.

Until 12:30, engineering work is taking place between Reading and Guildford. As a result, buses will replace morning trains between Reading and Guildford. An hourly train service will run between Guildford and Redhill / Gatwick Airport (early morning trains will run to / from Redhill - see below).

Overnight engineering work is taking place affecting the route between Reading and Gatwick Airport:

  • Before 08:40, Great Western Railway trains will not run between Redhill and Gatwick Airport. Please use alternative train company services to complete your journey.
  • The 23:13 Reading to Gatwick Airport service will terminate at Redhill. Please use alternative train company services to complete your journey.

         

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

Engineering work is taking place in the Worcester area.

  • Trains between Hereford / Great Malvern / Worcester and London Paddington will run between Moreton-in-Marsh and London Paddington only. 
  • You can use West Midlands Railway services between Hereford and Worcester Foregate Street.

From approximately 19:00, engineering work is taking place near Bristol Temple Meads. A number of trains will be diverted or cancelled between Taunton, Weston-super-Mare and Bristol Temple Meads. You may need to use replacement road transport for part of your journey.

From approximately 21:50, engineering work is taking place between Reading West and Bedwyn. Buses will replace trains between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn.

Greater Anglia

 

Saturday 29 May

Engineering work is taking place between Ipswich and Norwich. Buses replace trains between Ipswich and Stowmarket / Norwich.

Engineering work is taking place between Ely and Norwich. Buses replace trains between Wymondham and Norwich.

Sunday 30 May

Engineering work is taking place between Ipswich and Norwich. Buses replace trains between Ipswich and Norwich.

Engineering work is taking place between Ely and Norwich. Buses replace trains between Wymondham and Norwich.

Network Rail are working on rebuilding the railway station at Soham. As a result, the line between Ely and Bury St Edmunds will be closed. Buses will replace trains between Ely and Bury St Edmunds.

Track work is taking place in the Seven Sisters area, closing various lines. London Liverpool Street - Cheshunt trains that would normally serve Seven Sisters (Southbury route) will be diverted via Tottenham Hale (Lea Valley route).

Until approximately 09:10, engineering work is taking place between Broxbourne and Stansted Airport. Buses will replace trains between Broxbourne / Audley End and Stansted Airport.

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

Track work is taking place in the Seven Sisters area, closing various lines. London Liverpool Street - Cheshunt trains that would normally serve Seven Sisters (Southbury route) will be diverted via Tottenham Hale (Lea Valley route).

Heathrow Express

 

Saturday 29 May

Engineering work is taking place between London Paddington and Hayes & Harlington, closing some lines until 08:00.

First train from London Paddington to Heathrow Terminal 5 will depart 08:10, after which a normal service will operate. (A shuttle service from Heathrow Terminals 2&3 to Heathrow Terminal 5 will operate every 20 minutes from 05:21 until 08:01).

First train from Heathrow Terminal 5 to London Paddington will depart 08:12, after which a normal service will operate. (A shuttle service from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Heathrow Terminals 2&3 will operate every 20 minutes from 05:11 until 07:51).

Buses are replacing Island Line trains until late Summer 2021. 

The line is then expected to re-open with the launch of modern reliable trains.

Engineering work is taking place in the Motherwell area, closing various lines.

The 16:30 London Kings Cross to Glasgow Central service will terminate at Edinburgh. A replacement bus will run from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central.

Engineering work is taking place between Leeds and Horsforth, closing all lines.

Services between London Kings Cross and Harrogate will be amended to run between London Kings Cross and Leeds only. Customers should use Northern bus / train services between Leeds and Harrogate.

Early morning engineering work is taking place between London Kings Cross and Stevenage, closing various lines.

As a result, the 08:58 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh service will start from Stevenage at 09:17.

Monday 31 May (Spring bank holiday)

Engineering work is taking place in the Motherwell area, closing various lines.

The 06:48 Glasgow Central to London Kings Cross service will start from Edinburgh. The 15:30 London Kings Cross to Glasgow Central service will terminate at Edinburgh. Customers for these trains should use ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.

 

London Northwestern Railway

  • Train services between London Euston and Tring / Milton Keynes Central / Northampton will operate to a reduced timetable and will not call at Harrow & Wealdstone or Bushey (except for some early morning and late night services).
  • Most trains between London Euston and Birmingham New Street will run between Northampton and Birmingham New Street only.
  • Train services between London Euston and Crewe will operate to a special timetable between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central.

          

Sunday 30 May

Due to engineering work between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central:

  • Until 07:50, train services between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Northampton will not run. A replacement bus service will run between London Euston or Watford Junction and Northampton.
  • After 07:50, train services between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Northampton will run to a reduced timetable.
  • Some trains between London Euston and Birmingham New Street will run between Northampton and Birmingham New Street only.
  • Train services between London Euston and Crewe will operate to an amended timetable.

  

Due to engineering work between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street, train services between Birmingham New Street / Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street will not run.

  • You can travel between Birmingham and Crewe using Birmingham New Street - Crewe via Stoke-on-Trent services.
  • A rail replacement bus service will operate between Crewe and Liverpool South Parkway.
  • You can travel on Merseyrail train services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Central.

  • The Gospel Oak to Barking trains at 20:40, 22:10 and 23:30 will not run.

     

N.B. The planned engineering work between Romford and Upminster has been cancelled and trains will now run normally on this route.

From 12:15 onwards, engineering work is taking place between Earlestown and Warrington. As a result:

  • Leeds - Manchester Victoria - Chester services will be diverted to terminate at / start from Liverpool Lime Street instead of Chester.
  • You can use replacement buses to travel between Newton-le-Willows and Chester.
  • 18:06 Helsby to Ellesmere Port, and 18:19 Ellesmere Port to Helsby services will not run.

         

Sunday 30 May

Due to engineering work to renew signalling between Deansgate (Manchester) and Flixton:

  • Manchester Oxford Road - Liverpool Lime Street via Warrington Central services will run between Birchwood and Liverpool Lime Street only
  • Buses will run between Manchester Piccadilly and Birchwood.

  

Due to engineering work at Leeds station, the following amendments will be in place:

  • Leeds - Skipton will be an hourly train service, and will not call at Shipley
  • Leeds - Carlisle services will run between Skipton and Appleby only. Buses will run between Appleby and Carlisle due to engineering work.
  • Leeds - Morecambe trains will run between Skipton and Morecambe only.
  • Leeds - Bradford Forster Square services will run between Kirkstall Forge and Bradford Forster Square only. Buses will run between Leeds and Kirkstall Forge.
  • Leeds - Ilkley services will run between Kirkstall Forge and Ilkley only. Buses will run between Leeds and Kirkstall Forge.
  • Leeds - Manchester Victoria services will run between Bradford Interchange and Manchester Victoria only. Buses will run between Leeds and Bradford Interchange.
  • Leeds - Huddersfield services will run between Bradford Interchange and Huddersfield only. Buses will run between Leeds and Bradford Interchange.
  • Leeds - Doncaster services will run between Wakefield Westgate and Doncaster only. Buses will run between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate.
  • Leeds - Knottingley services will run between Wakefield Kirkgate and Knottingley only. Buses will run between Leeds and Wakefield Kirkgate.
  • Leeds - Harrogate - York services will run between Horsforth and Harrogate / York only. Buses will run between Leeds and Horsforth.
  • York - Blackpool North trains will not call at New Pudsey or Bradford Interchange.

    

Barrow-in-Furness - Workington - Carlisle services will be affected by engineering work between Dalton and Carlisle. Buses will replace trains between Workington, Maryport and Carlisle. Trains will run between Barrow-in-Furness, Sellafield and Workington.

Carlisle - Hexham - Newcastle services will be affected by engineering work between Carlisle and Brampton. As a result, Carlisle - Newcastle services will run between Haltwhistle and Newcastle only. Buses will replace trains between Carlisle and Haltwhistle.

Carlisle - Settle - Leeds services will be affected by engineering work between Carlisle and Armathwaite. Buses will replace trains between Carlisle and Appleby. Due to engineering work at Leeds, trains on this route will only run between Appleby and Skipton.

  • London Waterloo - Guildford via Epsom services will terminate / start back from Worcester Park. Buses will replace trains between Worcester Park and Effingham Junction. A revised train service will run between Effingham Junction and Guildford.
  • London Waterloo to Dorking services will terminate at Worcester Park. Buses will run between Worcester Park and Dorking.

Engineering work is taking place all day between Ascot and Aldershot, and until early afternoon between Aldershot and Guildford. As a result:

  • Until early afternoon, buses will replace trains between Ascot and Guildford.
  • From early afternoon, buses will replace trains between Ascot and Aldershot.

      

Engineering work is taking place between Salisbury and Tisbury, and also between Westbury and Salisbury. As a result:

  • To avoid the need to use replacement buses, Southeastern recommend that you consider travelling to and from Canterbury East instead of Canterbury West.
  • Additional trains will run between Canterbury West and Margate.
  • High Speed services via Ashford International will run between London St Pancras International and Ashford International only.
  • Trains between London Victoria and Ramsgate on the Maidstone East line will run between London Victoria and Ashford International only.

  • Trains that usually run between London Charing Cross and Dartford via Woolwich will be diverted to run via Bexleyheath instead. Trains that usually run between London Cannon Street and Slade Green will not run. Some additional services will run between Plumstead and Dartford.
  • Trains between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Sidcup will be amended to run between London Cannon Street and Dartford via Sidcup instead.
  • Customers can use Docklands Light Railway services between Lewisham and Greenwich.

Engineering work is taking place between Lewisham and Hither Green. Services between London Charing Cross and Sevenoaks via Grove Park will not call at Lewisham. You can use alternative train services to connect between Lewisham and Hither Green.

Clapham Junction - Watford Junction / Milton Keynes:

No trains will run between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction / Milton Keynes Central. Engineering work is taking place between Southall and London Paddington, closing various lines on Saturday evening.

From 21:00 on Saturday, services between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 5 will be reduced to two trains per hour. TfL Rail services to / from London will run to a reduced timetable.

Trains will not call at Acton Main Line / West Ealing or Hanwell. Customers to / from these stations should use London Underground services to complete their journey.

Additionally on Saturday, the 22:43 London Paddington to Reading service will depart 5 minutes earlier than usual.

Sunday 30 May

Engineering work is taking place between Southall and London Paddington, closing various lines.

All day on Sunday, services between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 5 will be reduced to two trains per hour. TfL Rail services to / from London will run to a reduced timetable.

From the start of service until 09:35 on Sunday, no trains will run between Ealing Broadway and London Paddington.
