Changes to train times

May Bank Holidays Travel Summary 2020

Changes to the Early May bank holiday this year - VE Day

Normally the Early May bank holiday falls on the first Monday in May. However this year, the bank holiday will take place instead on Friday 8 May - to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. This means that the 'Early May' bank holiday weekend will take place from Friday 8 May to Sunday 10 May.

Network Rail plans much of its major engineering work years in advance, so the Early May work was originally scheduled over the weekend of Saturday 2 May to Monday 4 May. In order for VE Day to be kept clear to allow veterans and their families to travel to special events, much of the planned work has remained on the original weekend. But the work has been reduced to take place on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May only, as Monday 4 May is a normal working day.

The Spring bank holiday weekend at the end of the month will be on the normal weekend days, from Saturday 23 May to Monday 25 May.

Background Information

Fewer people travel by rail over bank holiday weekends, which is why rail companies decide to carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time. Some train companies may also be making changes to their usual timetable, and some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

Major Engineering Work

Details of the major engineering work taking place during the bank holiday weekends will be listed here when available. We expect to start publishing these details from mid-February onwards.

However, we are already aware that major improvement work will be carried out on the West Coast Main Line over the weekends of 2-3 May and 23-25 May - you can find more details here.

Information on all line closures will also be available on our future engineering works page.
