August Bank Holiday Travel Summary 2020

The information in this Summary is subject to late-notice change due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Please continue to check the latest travel advice.

The August Bank Holiday weekend this year is from Saturday 29 August to Monday 31 August. Fewer people travel by rail over bank holiday weekends, which is why Network Rail plan to carry out essential improvement and engineering work during this time.

No major London terminal stations will be completely closed during the August bank holiday weekend.

However, major engineering work will be taking place at the following locations:

A major line closure means there will be a significant impact on journeys between Birmingham New Street and London Euston from 29 to 31 August inclusive. Please travel either side of the bank holiday weekend where possible. More information is available here.

Major engineering work is taking place between Rugby and Birmingham International. Trains will be diverted between Rugby and Birmingham International and will not call at Coventry but will call additionally at Nuneaton. Buses will run between Nuneaton and Coventry.

Sunday 30 August

Major engineering work is taking place between Rugby and Birmingham International. Trains will be diverted between Rugby and Birmingham International and will not call at Coventry but will call additionally at Nuneaton. Buses will run between Nuneaton and Coventry.

Monday 31 August

Major engineering work is taking place between Rugby and Birmingham International. Trains will be diverted between Rugby and Birmingham International and will not call at Coventry but will call additionally at Nuneaton. Buses will run between Nuneaton and Coventry.

Also, overhead line maintenance is taking place between London Fenchurch Street and Barking until approximately 10:00, therefore services will start from / terminate at Upminster during this time.

Basildon line services will be diverted to start from / terminate at London Fenchurch Street and will call additionally at West Ham and Limehouse.

Customers travelling to / from Stratford may use the London Underground Jubilee Line between West Ham and Stratford.

Monday 31 August

Due to engineering work, buses will replace trains:

Engineering works on other lines mean more customers than usual are likely to be travelling on Chiltern Railways. Please note that social distancing reduces train capacity. This means journey times are likely to be longer and queuing will be in place at stations and when boarding.

Saturday 29 August

Chiltern Railways will be operating lengthened trains between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street all day, to allow for adequate social distancing. Because these trains will be over-length, they will be unable to call at Kings Sutton, Hatton and Lapworth. Therefore, local journeys to and from these three stations will be provided by minibuses for most of the day, as follows:

  • Bicester North - Kings Sutton - Banbury
  • Warwick Parkway - Hatton - Lapworth - Dorridge

A normal service will run on the route between Aylesbury Vale Parkway and London Marylebone via Amersham.

CrossCountry

 

Saturday 29 August

Due to major engineering work between Rugby and Birmingham International, replacement buses will run between Leamington Spa and Coventry (calling at Kenilworth) and between Leamington Spa and Birmingham International (running non-stop).

Sunday 30 August

Due to major engineering work between Rugby and Birmingham International, replacement buses will run between Leamington Spa and Coventry (calling at Kenilworth) and between Leamington Spa and Birmingham International (running non-stop).

Due to engineering work between Birmingham and Tamworth, trains will be diverted and cannot call at Wilnecote and Tamworth. Journey times will be extended by up to 30 minutes. Road transport will be in place between Birmingham New Street and Tamworth / Wilnecote and between Tamworth and Burton for customers travelling to / from Tamworth and Wilnecote.

Trains between Nottingham and Cardiff Central will be amended to run between Nottingham and Derby, and between Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central only. You should use alternative CrossCountry services between Derby and Birmingham to complete your journey.

Monday 31 August

Due to major engineering work between Rugby and Birmingham International, replacement buses will run between Leamington Spa and Coventry (calling at Kenilworth) and between Leamington Spa and Birmingham International (running non-stop).

East Midlands Railway

 

Saturday 29 August

Trains between London Paddington and Cardiff Central / Swansea will be reduced to an hourly service due to engineering work. These services will be diverted between Swindon and Newport via Bath Spa (NOT calling). Bristol Parkway will not be served, however trains will call additionally at Patchway for road transport to / from Bristol Parkway.

Most trains from London Paddington to Swansea will call additionally at Didcot Parkway.

Until early evening, trains will depart London Paddington, Reading and Swindon up to 30 minutes earlier than normal.

Trains between Norwich and Great Yarmouth via Reedham will be diverted via Acle and Lingwood. A connecting bus will run between Lingwood and Reedham via Cantley.

Sunday 30 August

Trains to / from Stansted Airport and Cambridge will be diverted via Stratford between London Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale. Journey times will be extended by 10 minutes, with trains departing London Liverpool Street 10 minutes earlier than normal.

Trains between Stratford and Meridian Water will not run. Northumberland Park and Meridian Water will be served by Stratford - Broxbourne services, which will depart 1 minute earlier than normal at 13 and 43 minutes past each hour.

Trains between London Liverpool Street and Colchester / Clacton / Ipswich / Norwich will be subject to minor re-timings.

Buses will replace trains between Ipswich and Norwich / Bury St Edmunds due to engineering work.

Until 10:00, buses will replace trains between Southend Victoria and Hockley due to engineering work.

Until 20:00 buses will replace trains between Norwich and Lowestoft via Oulton Broad North due to engineering work.

Trains between Norwich and Great Yarmouth via Reedham will be diverted via Acle and Lingwood. A connecting bus will run between Lingwood and Reedham via Cantley.

Monday 31 August

A revised Saturday service will operate on all Greater Anglia routes, except on local services to and from Ipswich and Norwich where a Monday service will operate.

Due to major engineering work, trains between London Euston / Northampton and Birmingham New Street will be replaced by buses between Rugby and Birmingham International. A special train service will run between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street.

Buses will replace trains between Crewe and Liverpool South Parkway due to engineering work. Customers can use Merseyrail services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Central / Moorfields.

Sunday 30 August

There will be no trains between Highbury & Islington and New Cross / New Cross Gate / Queens Road Peckham due to engineering work. Customers should use alternative London Overground services between Highbury & Islington and Dalston Kingsland. Customers should use alternative London Overground services between Highbury & Islington and Dalston Kingsland. From Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August, Network Rail will be carrying out essential track work at Whitton Junction. This means that the lines between Twickenham, Hounslow and Staines will be closed. During this closure, works will also be taking place at the new Feltham Depot to connect the depot to the railway line.

A revised train service will run between London Waterloo and Twickenham via Richmond.

A revised train service will run between London Waterloo and Hounslow via Brentford.

Replacement buses will run between:

  • Twickenham and Hounslow

Train services will run between Staines and Reading, between Staines and Weybridge and between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside.

Train services that usually run between Slade Green and London Cannon Street via Sidcup will be amended to run via Bexleyheath instead. London Victoria to Dartford services will be amended to run between London Victoria and Sidcup only. Services between London Charing Cross and Gravesend will not run.

Services between London Victoria and Dartford (via Bexleyheath) will be diverted, and will run between London Victoria and Sidcup instead. Additional services will run between Slade Green and London Charing Cross via Bexleyheath. Services between Slade Green and London Cannon Street via Sidcup will also be diverted to run via Bexleyheath, providing additional services to / from London Cannon Street via Bexleyheath.

Buses will replace trains between Lewisham and Hayes due to engineering work.

Due to engineering work between Nunhead and Shortlands, services between London Victoria and Dover Priory via Denmark Hill (Sole Street services) will run non stop between London Victoria and Bromley South, and will be retimed.

Stopping services that start at / terminate at Bromley South will not run. Services between London Victoria and Orpington will not be affected by this engineering work, and will run normally.

Customers can use Thameslink services between Denmark Hill and Herne Hill

Sunday 30 August

Due to engineering work between Slade Green / Sidcup and Dartford:

Buses will replace trains between:

  • Sidcup and Dartford
  • Slade Green and Dartford.

Train services will usually run between London Charing Cross / Cannon Street and Dartford via Woolwich Arsenal will be amended to run between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Woolwich Arsenal only.

Train services that usually run between Slade Green and London Cannon Street via Sidcup will be amended to run via Bexleyheath instead. London Victoria to Dartford services will be amended to run between London Victoria and Sidcup only. Services between London Charing Cross and Gravesend will not run.

Services between London Victoria and Dartford (via Bexleyheath) will be diverted, and will run between London Victoria and Sidcup instead. Additional services will run between Slade Green and London Charing Cross via Bexleyheath. Services between Slade Green and London Cannon Street via Sidcup will also be diverted to run via Bexleyheath, providing additional services to / from London Cannon Street via Bexleyheath.

Buses will replace trains between Lewisham and Hayes due to engineering work.

Due to engineering work between Nunhead and Shortlands, services between London Victoria and Canterbury East via Denmark Hill (Sole Street services) will run non stop between London Victoria and Bromley South, and will be retimed.

Buses will replace trains between Lewisham and Hayes due to engineering work.

  • Crowborough and Uckfield (all stations).

     

Customers should change at Purley or East Croydon for trains to / from London.

Due to engineering work in the Beckenham Junction area, services that usually run between London Bridge and Beckenham Junction will be amended to run between London Bridge and Crystal Palace only. Customers travelling to and from Beckenham Junction can use Tramlink services between East Croydon and Beckenham Junction.

After 20:10 no Southern trains will run between Shepherds Bush and Watford Junction / Milton Keynes Central due to engineering work. Customers can use Southern services between Clapham Junction and London Victoria, London Underground between Victoria and Euston, and London Northwestern Railway services between London Euston and Watford Junction / Milton Keynes Central.

Sunday 30 August

Buses will replace trains between Three Bridges and Horsham due to engineering work.

Buses will replace trains between Epsom and Dorking due to engineering work.

Monday 31 August

Southern will be running a revised service on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Due to engineering work between South Croydon and East Grinstead, buses will replace trains between:

  • Purley and East Grinstead (calling at Upper Warlingham and Oxted)

Saturday 29 August

Due to engineering work between London St Pancras International and Cricklewood:

  • Before 23:30, trains to / from London St Pancras will be amended to run to / from alternative platforms at London St Pancras International in a different part of the station
  • After 23:30, trains will run between Bedford / Luton and Mill Hill Broadway only.
  • No trains will call at Kentish Town. Replacement buses will run between West Hampstead Thameslink and London St Pancras International.
  • Trains to / from Sutton will be amended to run between London Blackfriars and Sutton only. Customers for these trains should use alternative Southern trains / London Buses / London Underground to complete their journey.
  • Trains between Horsham and Peterborough will additionally call at Salfords and Earlswood.
  • Customers can use London Underground and London Buses.

Due to engineering work between Slade Green / Sidcup and Dartford, trains that usually run between Kentish Town and Rainham will be amended to run between Dartford and Rainham only. Customers should use alternative Southeastern services between London and Dartford.

Due to engineering work between Nunhead and Shortlands, Thameslink services will be diverted, not calling at stations via Catford, and instead calling at Herne Hill, Kent House and Beckenham Junction. Due to engineering work between London St Pancras International and Cricklewood:

  • Trains to / from Sutton will be amended to run between London Blackfriars and Sutton only. Customers for these trains should use alternative Southern trains / London Buses / London Underground to complete their journey.
  • Buses will run between Luton and Stevenage (to connect with alternative London services), and between Mill Hill Broadway and London St Pancras International.
  • Customers can also use London Underground and London Buses.
