August Bank Holiday Travel Summary 2022

Welcome to the National Rail Enquiries travel advice summary for the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 27 to Monday 29 August.

​​​​​​​Major engineering work will be taking place during the holiday period, affecting certain routes. Network Rail carry out essential improvement and engineering work across the rail network during this time as far fewer people usually travel by train.

Some train companies will also be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.

Saturday 27 August

Engineering work will be taking place between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central. A reduced number of platforms will be available at London Euston station.

  • As a result, an amended timetable will be in operation for all services to and from London Euston. 
  • Trains between Holyhead / Bangor / Chester and London Euston will be amended to run between Holyhead / Bangor and Crewe only. Change at Crewe for trains to / from London Euston.

        

Engineering work will be taking place between Stoke-on-Trent and Stockport. A reduced service of two trains per hour will run to and from Manchester Piccadilly, one will run via Stoke-on-Trent, Alsager and Crewe, and one via Crewe and Wilmslow. A bus service will provide connections to and from Macclesfield.

Sunday 28 August

Route via Basildon:

Between 08:00 and 16:00, due to engineering work between West Horndon and Laindon, services from London towards Southend and Shoeburyness will use Platform 1 at West Horndon and Platform 2 at Laindon.

Route via Ockendon:

Due to engineering work between Upminster and Pitsea, services will be diverted via an alternative route. Trains will call additionally at Laindon and Basildon but will not call at stations via Ockendon or Tilbury. Rail replacement transport will be in operation between Upminster and Pitsea via Ockendon and Tilbury.

Route via Rainham:

Due to engineering work between Barking and Grays, these services will not run. Rail replacement transport will run between Upminster and Grays via Rainham and Purfleet. Customers travelling to / from Dagenham Dock may use TfL bus routes EL2 or 287.

Monday 29 August

All routes:

After 01:10, due to engineering work between Benfleet and Chalkwell, buses will replace very early morning trains between Pitsea and Shoeburyness.

Caledonian Sleeper

No Saturday night sleeper service as usual.

Chiltern Railways

 

Saturday 27 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Great Missenden and Amersham. As a result, the following amended service will operate:

  • Trains will run between Aylesbury Vale Parkway and Great Missenden
  • Buses will run Great Missenden - Amersham - Beaconsfield, to connect with alternative train services to / from London Marylebone
  • London Underground Metropolitan Line replacement bus services will run between Amersham and Harrow-on-the-Hill.

       

Sunday 28 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Great Missenden and Amersham. As a result, the following amended service will operate:

CrossCountry

 

A long term engineering project means buses will replace trains through the bank holiday weekend between Newport and Gloucester.

Saturday 27 August

Engineering work is taking place between Kidsgrove and Cheadle Hulme. As a result trains will be diverted and will not call at Stoke-on-Trent or Macclesfield. The diverted trains will make an extra stop at Wilmslow. To get passengers to and from the missed out stations, buses will run as follows to provide connections:

  • Macclesfield - Stoke-on-Trent - Stafford
  • Stoke-on-Trent - Macclesfield - Wilmslow

 

Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham New Street and Nuneaton. As a result of this line closure:

  • Birmingham New Street - Leicester / Stansted Airport: Trains will only run between Nuneaton and Leicester / Stansted Airport. Replacement buses will run between Birmingham New Street and Nuneaton.
  • Cardiff Central - Nottingham: Trains will run between Cardiff Central and Birmingham New Street, and also between Coleshill Parkway and Nottingham. Replacement buses will run between Birmingham New Street and Coleshill Parkway.
  • Services to / from North East England / Scotland: Trains will be diverted to run on an alternative route, and will not call at Tamworth. Journey times will be extended by up to an hour.

Late evening engineering work means a small number of late night trains will not call at Burnham or Taplow. Buses will provide connections to trains at Slough.

Greater Anglia

 

Saturday 27 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Ipswich and Ely / Cambridge North. Buses will replace trains between these stations. The exception on Saturday is that a shuttle train service will run between Cambridge and Newmarket for the race meeting.

Engineering work will be taking place between Broxbourne and Hertford East. Buses will replace trains between these stations.

Before 06:00, engineering work will be taking place between London Liverpool Street and Cheshunt via Tottenham Hale. Very early morning trains that normally run via Tottenham Hale will be diverted via Seven Sisters.

Sunday 28 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Ipswich and Ely / Cambridge North. Buses will replace trains between these stations.

  • All day, trains will not run via Lea Bridge, and will be diverted to run to / from London Liverpool Street via Hackney Downs. For Stratford, you can use alternative Greater Anglia services. For Lea Bridge, you can use London Bus services between Hackney Downs and Stratford via Lea Bridge.

 

Before 10:00, engineering work will be taking place between Southend Victoria and Hockley. Buses will replace early morning trains between these stations.

Monday 29 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Ipswich and Ely / Cambridge North. Buses will replace trains between these stations.

Engineering work will be taking place between Stratford and Meridian Water. As a result, trains will not run via Lea Bridge, and will be diverted to run to / from London Liverpool Street via Hackney Downs. For Stratford, you can use alternative Greater Anglia services. For Lea Bridge, you can use London Bus services between Hackney Downs and Stratford via Lea Bridge.

Engineering work is taking place between Waltham Cross and Hertford East / Harlow Town. Buses will replace trains between these stations.

Heathrow Express

Engineering work will be taking place between London Euston and Northampton at various locations. As a result, a revised train service will operate on most routes to and from London Euston.

Due to engineering work between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street, train services between Crewe and Birmingham New Street will be re-timed and will not call at Tame Bridge Parkway. Buses will connect Tame Bridge Parkway with Wolverhampton.

Until 08:45 engineering work will be taking place between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton. Early morning trains between London Euston and Northampton will be replaced by trains between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton.

Monday 29 August

Engineering work will be taking place between London Euston and Northampton at various locations. As a result, a revised and reduced train service will operate on most routes to and from London Euston.

London Overground

 

Saturday 27 August

Due to engineering work there will be no service between Surrey Quays and New Cross. Customers are advised to use New Cross Gate station instead.

Due to engineering work there will be no trains between Hackney Downs and Chingford. A replacement bus service will operate between these stations.

Due to engineering work a reduced timetable will run between Kilburn High Road and London Euston.

Engineering work will be taking place in the Staines area. As a result:

  • London Waterloo - Reading services will be diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water. These services will call additionally at Surbiton, Weybridge, Addlestone and Chertsey.
  • London Waterloo - Windsor services will be diverted after Twickenham and will terminate at Hounslow. Additional services will run between London Waterloo and Hounslow via Twickenham. Buses will run between Hounslow and Windsor via Staines.
  • London Waterloo - Weybridge via Staines services will terminate at Hounslow. Buses will run between Hounslow and Virginia Water via Staines.
  • Due to the diverted London Waterloo to Reading services, London Waterloo to Basingstoke stopping services and London Waterloo to Alton services will run combined to Woking where the train will divide. These services will call additionally at West Byfleet. Some services will also call additionally at Clapham Junction.

         

Sunday 28 August

Engineering work will be taking place in the Staines area. As a result:

  • London Waterloo - Reading services will be revised. An hourly service will be diverted after Twickenham and will terminate at Hounslow. An hourly London Waterloo to Reading service will be diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water. These services will call additionally at Wimbledon, Surbiton, Weybridge, Addlestone and Chertsey. These services will not call at Vauxhall. Buses will run between Hounslow and Virginia Water via Staines. A revised service will run between Virginia Water and Reading via Ascot.
  • London Waterloo -Windsor services will be diverted after Twickenham and will terminate at Hounslow. Buses will run between Hounslow and Windsor via Staines.
  • London Waterloo - Woking via Staines services will terminate at Hounslow.
  • London Waterloo - Kingston via Hounslow services in the afternoon and evening will be revised.

        

Engineering work will be taking place at Effingham Junction. As a result:

  • London Waterloo / Wimbledon - Guildford via Cobham services will not run. You should travel on other services to Surbiton. Buses will run between Surbiton and Guildford via Effingham Junction.
  • London Waterloo - Guildford via Epsom services will be diverted after Leatherhead and will terminate at Dorking. Buses will run between Leatherhead and Guildford via Effingham Junction.

 

Engineering work will be taking place between Aldershot and Alton. Train services between Woking and Alton will terminate at Aldershot, buses will replace trains between Aldershot and Alton.

Due to engineering work, buses will replace trains between Eastleigh and Fareham.

Southeastern

 

Saturday 27 August

Network Rail will be carrying out engineering work during the August bank holiday weekend on the lines to / from London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street. No services will run to / from London Charing Cross or London Cannon Street. The following changes apply:

Paddock Wood Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Ramsgate via Tonbridge and Ashford will run to and from London Victoria instead, and will stop additionally at Orpington and Hildenborough.

Hastings Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Hastings will run to and from London Bridge, but will be diverted between London Bridge and Tonbridge to run via East Croydon.

Woolwich Line:  Trains between London Charing Cross and Dartford via Woolwich will run to and from London Victoria instead.  Trains between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Greenwich will not run.

Bexleyheath Line: Trains between London Charing Cross and Dartford via Bexleyheath will not run.  Services between London Victoria and Dartford via Bexleyheath will run normally.

Sidcup Line:  Trains between London Charing Cross and Gravesend will run to and from London Victoria, and will stop additionally at Lewisham. Services between London Cannon Street and Slade Green via Sidcup will not run.

Hayes Line:  Trains on the Hayes line will run to and from London Blackfriars instead of London Charing Cross or London Cannon Street and will run every 30 minutes. Trains will stop additionally at Elephant and Castle.

Grove Park Line:  Trains between London Charing Cross and Sevenoaks will run to and from London Victoria, and run non stop between London Victoria and Lewisham.  Services between London Cannon Street and Orpington will not run.

Bromley North Line: Trains between Grove Park and Bromley North will be retimed. 

Sole Street Line:  Stopping services between London Victoria and Gillingham via Denmark Hill will be extended to run to and from Dover in place of trains which normally run between London Victoria and Dover, which will not run. 

Replacement buses will run between Lewisham and Charlton via New Cross and Greenwich.

Due to engineering work, there will be no Stansted Express trains or bus replacements.

An alternative train route will operate from Stansted Airport to Cambridge, and then Cambridge to London Kings Cross. It will take approximately 2 hours. You can also get a tube train between London Kings Cross and London Liverpool Street stations.

Stansted Express tickets will be accepted for this alternative route (by the London Underground, Great Northern, Greater Anglia and CrossCountry train operators).

Monday 29 August

Engineering work will be taking place between Merthyr Tydfil / Aberdare and Pontypridd. Buses will replace trains between Merthyr Tydfil / Aberdare and Pontypridd.

Late night engineering work will be taking place between Rhyl and Holyhead. As a result the  23:40 Shrewsbury to Holyhead service will terminate at Chester. A replacement bus will run from Chester to Holyhead.

Late evening engineering work will be taking place between Wrexham General and Bidston. After 20:50 buses will replace trains between these stations.

West Midlands Railway
