Restriction Code

Some tickets may require you to travel at specific times of the day, days of the week or on a specific route. Our Journey Planner takes ticket restrictions into account with the selection that you have made and will only have shown tickets that are valid for the selected trains.

Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before the times shown from the following stations:

  • 07:15 from Dawlish

  • 06:16 from Devonport;

  • 06:16 from Dockyard;

  • 07:56 from Exeter St Davids (also valid at 07:20 and from 07:26 to 07:44);

  • 08:35 from Fareham;

  • 06:41 from Ivybridge;

  • 07:33 from Newton Abbot (also valid on the 0659 CrossCountry service, changing at Bristol Temple Meads or Parkway; also valid on the 07:18 service)

  • 07:01 from Paignton

  • 07:20 from Plymouth (also valid on the 06:20 CrossCountry service, changing at Bristol Temple Meads or Parkway; also valid on the 06:37 service)

  • 08:50 from Salisbury;​​​​​​​

  • 07:20 from Saltash;

  • 08:50 from Southampton Central;

  • 07:00 from St Germans;

  • 08:16 from Taunton;

  • 07:11 from Teignmouth

  • 07:13 from Torquay

  • 07:16 from Torre

  • 06:46 from Totnes; 

  • Newton St Cyres and all intermediate stations to Barnstaple - restriction applies at Exeter St Davids - see restriction code LC.

Not valid on trains timed to arrive at Waterloo after 02:29 and before 09:52.

Return Travel

Not valid on trains timed to depart:

  • London Paddington after 04:29 and before 09:12 and after 16:40 until 18:03

  • Reading after 04:29 and before 09:39 and after 17:03 until 18:28

  • London Waterloo after 02:29 and before 08:15

Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before the times shown from the following stations:

  • 08:39 from Newbury;

  • 08:50 from Salisbury;

  • 08:50 from Southampton Central.

Off-Peak tickets from stations not listed are valid for connections into trains departing as shown above.

Not valid on trains timed to arrive at Waterloo after 02:29 and before 09:52

Notes

Validity code WO applies to all journeys via Newbury or Didcot Parkway, not passing through Reading.

Validity Code Q8 applies to all journeys via Fareham / Southampton / Salisbury.

Validity Codes 7E / 9J apply to all journeys via London St Pancras International.

Easement

If travelling on the Great Western Railway  'Night Riviera' sleeper service in the westbound direction, customers may continue their journey after alighting from the sleeper in the morning without further restriction.

Seasonal Variations

GWR Christmas and New Year Travel Restrictions 2025/26

Up to and including Friday 19 December: Usual ticket restrictions apply.

Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 December:

Off-Peak tickets valid all day.

Super Off-Peak tickets subject to normal restriction times.

Monday 29 December to Friday 02 January * No ticket restrictions apply.

Monday 05 January 2026 onwards Usual ticket restrictions apply.

*Please note this only applies to journeys priced by GWR. Flows within Wales, between Cheltenham and Gloucester and long-distance routes to areas not served by GWR are priced by other train companies, who may have different Christmas travel restrictions in place. Usual restrictions will apply to CPAY and may apply to other Operators’ services. Please check retail systems if unsure.

Customers using Off-Peak travel cards and arriving at London Paddington before 09:30 on weekdays, will need to wait until 09:30 for onward travel from Paddington.
