GroupSave - Terms and Conditions

General Conditions

A group of three to nine customers travelling together may be eligible for the GroupSave discount on selected journeys on National Rail

The GroupSave discount is 1/3 off the price of Adult single or return tickets, and London Travelcards with an origin station outside of the London Zonal Area

Children between the ages of 5 and 15 years old inclusive may travel with an Adult ticket provided the group size is no less than three and no more than nine, people travelling together

All customers travelling on tickets with GroupSave discount must have the same origin, destination, and route and customers within the group must travel together at all times

You will be asked to pay the difference between the price of a discounted ticket and the full price Standard fare (or the Penalty Fare if travelling in a Penalty Fare area) if:

  • you travel beyond the station for which your ticket is issued;

  • you travel on a train operated by a company other than those listed in Condition 6; or

  • you travel on a route for which a higher fare applies or

  • you travel at a time when GroupSave discounted fares do not apply

Train companies you can travel with

GroupSave discounted tickets are valid for travel on services operated by the following Train Operating Companies:

  • c2c

  • Chiltern Railways

  • Elizabeth line

  • Gatwick Express

  • Great Northern

  • Great Western Railway*

  • Greater Anglia

  • London Northwestern Railway

  • London Overground

  • Southeastern

  • Southern

  • South Western Railway

  • Stansted Express**

  • Thameslink

  • West Midlands Railway

*excluding ‘Night Riviera’ services, including local journeys in Devon and Cornwall

**excluding journeys between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale or London Liverpool Street, where other group offers are available

GroupSave discounted tickets are valid for travel on services operated by Transport for Wales services only as part of a wider journey (e.g. Bristol to Swansea)

Limitations to GroupSave

GroupSave discount is not available on First Class tickets

GroupSave discounted tickets can only be used on London Underground or DLR services:

with a ‘cross-London’ marker (†), or with a valid London Travelcard from outside the London Zonal Area within the Zones shown on the London Travelcard

Other group tickets may be available for use exclusively on the services of train companies not listed in 6a, including

  • Transport for Wales

  • ScotRail

  • East Midlands Railway

  • Stansted Express.

These Conditions will not apply to any other group discount scheme or offer provided by these train companies.

GroupSave discounts are only valid on services outside of the busiest travel times and on Off-Peak and Off-Peak Day tickets, except if there is no Off-Peak or Off-Peak Day ticket offered for the journey. For these journeys GroupSave discount can be applied to another ticket valid to travel after 09:30 Monday to Friday (e.g. an Anytime Day Single)

In addition to these terms and conditions, further restrictions may apply according to the terms and conditions of the ticket the GroupSave discount is applied to. These additional terms and conditions will be made available at time of purchase

GroupSave discounted travel is permitted at any time on weekends and Bank Holidays.

Additional discounts, such as Railcards, cannot be applied to GroupSave discounted tickets

Exceptional days and/or services, when GroupSave cannot be applied, will be advertised up to 12 weeks in advance at www.nationalrail.co.uk/groupsave. Rail staff at stations will also make customers aware of exceptions at time of purchase

GroupSave discount cannot be applied to;

  • Travelcards valid wholly within the London Zonal Area

  • ‘Pay as you go’ fares in London

  • Tickets for travel wholly, or for any part of a journey, on an operator not listed in 6a or 6b above

  • Tickets with another discount already applied

GroupSave discount may not be available through all retail channels. If GroupSave is not offered, visit www.nationalrail.co.uk or contact a member of rail staff

When asked by rail staff, you must show a valid Ticket. If you fail to do so, the Train Companies reserve the right to charge you the full price Standard single fare for your journey as if no Ticket was purchased before starting the journey, and in some cases a Penalty Fare, in accordance with the National Rail Conditions of Travel
