Anytime Tickets Terms and Conditions
All tickets and travel are subject to the National Rail Conditions of Travel.
1. Description
1.1 Fully flexible with no time restrictions on travel during the validity of the ticket.
1.2 May require travel via a specific route or on the services of a specific train operator. This will be stated on the ticket. Otherwise, valid on any permitted route for the journey being undertaken.
1.3 Additional conditions may apply when used with a Railcard or other discount. These additional conditions will be made clear as part of the Railcard or discount arrangement.
1.4 Valid in Standard Class or First Class as indicated on the ticket. First Class tickets may also be used in Standard Class accommodation. Standard Class tickets are not valid in First Class accommodation unless an appropriate excess or supplement is available and has been purchased, or permission has been expressly given for the ticket to be used in First Class accommodation.
1.5 The outward part of an Anytime Return ticket is only valid for travel when accompanied by an unused return part of the same ticket.
2. Availability
2.1 Available to be purchased up to the point of departure.
3. Child Rate
3.1 50% discount for children aged 5 to 15 inclusive on Standard Class and First Class fares. Children under 5 do not require a ticket provided they are travelling with an adult holding a valid ticket.
4. Discounts:
4.1 Passengers holding a discounted ticket must be able to produce evidence of entitlement for that discount with their ticket (for example, a valid and in date Railcard). Failure to produce such entitlement will be treated as if no ticket were held.
4.2 16-17 Saver: 50% discount on Standard Class fares only (not valid on ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper services).
4.3 16-25 Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class fares only.
For journeys undertaken before 10:00 Monday to Friday a £12 minimum fare applies. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays. This restriction does not apply in July and August.
4.4 26-30 Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class fares only.
For journeys undertaken before 10:00 Monday to Friday a £12 minimum fare applies. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays.
4.5 Disabled Persons Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class and First Class fares.
4.6 Family & Friends Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class fares only.
Discounted tickets are not valid when travelling between two stations inside London and the South East area until the equivalent Off-Peak ticket type for the journey being undertaken becomes available.
4.7 HM Forces Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class and First Class fares.
For journeys undertaken before 10:00 Monday to Friday a £12 minimum fare applies. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays. This restriction does not apply in July and August.
4.8 Network Railcard (London and South East): 1/3 discount on Standard Class fares only. Not valid before 10:00 Monday to Friday. A £13 minimum fare applies to all journeys Monday to Friday. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays.
4.9 Senior Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard and First Class fares.
Discounted tickets are not valid when travelling between two stations inside London and the South East area until the equivalent Off-Peak ticket type for the journey being undertaken becomes available.
4.10 Two Together Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard and First Class fares.
Not valid before 09:30 Monday to Friday. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays.
4.11 Veterans Railcard: 1/3 discount on Standard Class and First Class fares.
For journeys undertaken before 10:00 Monday to Friday a £12 minimum fare applies. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays. This restriction does not apply in July and August.
4.12 Annual Gold Card (London and South East)/Gold Record Card: 1/3 discount on Standard Class fares only.
Not valid before 09:30 Monday to Friday. This restriction does not apply on bank holidays.
4.13 JobCentre Plus Travel Discount Card 50% discount on Standard Class fares only.
4.14 Other regional or local Railcards or concessionary schemes: Refer to local information. See Regional Railcards for more information.
5. When the ticket can be used

The 'day' on which a ticket is valid starts at midnight (00:00) and ends at 04:29 on the following morning, by which time all travel must have been completed for that ticket or that portion of the ticket. This is to allow for journeys to be completed on trains that run past midnight or depart after midnight as part of the previous day's service pattern. |
5.1 Anytime Day Single tickets are valid on the date shown on the ticket.
5.2 Anytime Day Return tickets are valid on the date shown on the ticket.
5.3 Anytime Single tickets are valid for 2 days including the date shown on the ticket.
5.4 Anytime Return tickets:
the outward portion is valid for 5 days including the date shown on the ticket
the return portion must be used within 1 calendar month from the start date shown on the ticket.
6. Reservations
6.1 Seat reservations are not compulsory unless it is indicated that they are required on a service that the passenger wishes to use. Journey planners will indicate where reservations are available or required. In some cases, the reservation may be for a space on the train rather than a reserved seat.
6.2 Not all train services are reservable.
7. Break of journey
7.1 Break of journey is allowed at any intermediate station along the permitted routes of travel except as set out in the National Rail Conditions of Travel Condition 16.3 (circular journeys) and 16.5 (crossing London). This also includes starting short of the origin on the ticket or finishing before the destination shown on the ticket.
7.2 There is no limit in the number of times you can break your journey within the validity of the ticket.
8. Crossing London
8.1 Tickets that are valid to cross London normally include validity on the appropriate TfL services/London Underground, Elizabeth line and DLR services needed to make the connection.

9. Changing your ticket
9.1 A ticket will need to be changed in order to:
travel to a destination further than where it was purchased to
change the route of the ticket
change the class of travel from Standard Class to First Class
change the date of travel
9.2 Changes to tickets purchased online should be made by the retailer from which the ticket was bought. Staffed station ticket offices can also make changes in most cases, provided that this is done before the start of the journey.

A change to the date of travel can only be made BEFORE the date on which the ticket becomes valid for travel. Other alterations such as changes to the route or class of travel will be subject to a suitable alternative Anytime product being available. In some cases, it may be cheaper to purchase a new ticket. |
10. Refunds
For tickets purchased until 31 March 2026:
10.1 Your ticket is refundable.
10.2 If you decide not to use your ticket to make all or part of your intended journey then you can get a refund by returning your unused ticket to the ticket office or place of purchase (for tickets bought via websites, telesales or travel agents) within 28 days of the ticket expiry date. You may be required to pay an administration fee.
10.3 The refund amount will normally take into account any use you have made of the ticket and in some circumstances no refund will be paid.
For tickets purchased from 1 April 2026:
10.1 Refundable until 23:59 the day before the ticket becomes valid for travel.
10.2 Not refundable once the ticket has become valid for travel unless Condition 30 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel (failure of train service) applies.
10.3 In exceptional circumstances a refund may be considered on unused or part-used tickets that have become valid for travel. In such cases:
an application must be made to the retailer within 28 days of the expiry date of the ticket and should include the reason for non-use
additional evidence may be requested
refunds will be on a discretionary basis
any use made of the ticket may mean that in some circumstances no refund will be due
10.4 Refunds are only available from the retailer that sold the tickets.
10.5 An administration fee (up to a maximum of £5 per ticket) may be applied.
