CrossCountry

CrossCountry has announced adjustments to its timetable from 14 December 2025.

The changes will see an uplift in CrossCountry services, including some additional services between Reading and Newcastle, and between Birmingham and Leicester.

The introduction of CrossCountry’s December timetable coincides with a major industry-wide update to the timetable on the key East Coast Main Line corridor. This includes significant changes to services for other operators using the rail artery, which spans 393 miles between London and Edinburgh.

Overall, CrossCountry services will increase – with additional services on the busy Reading – Newcastle and Birmingham – Leicester routes across both weekdays and weekends. Passengers travelling on Sundays will also see more resilient and reliable services across the CrossCountry network.

However, significant engineering work across the network from Christmas 2025 until the end of January means the new timetable will not come into full effect until February 2026.

A copy of the CrossCountry timetables from 14 December 2025 to 16 May 2026 is available to download from the CrossCountry website.

East Midlands Railway

From Sunday 14 December, East Midlands Railway have aligned their timetable with the big East Coast Main Line timetable change to provide smoother, more reliable connections at key interchange hubs such as Crewe, Nottingham, Derby, Peterborough, Doncaster, Newark North Gate, Grantham, Sleaford and Lincoln.

Changes in the new timetable include:

  • Grimsby - Lincoln via Leicester: This will now become a Nottingham to Leicester shuttle service

  • Crewe - Lincoln: The majority of customers in Staffordshire will now have access to direct trains from Crewe to Lincoln. The extended service from Crewe to Lincoln underpins a standard hour timetable that brings simplicity and consistency to the regional network

  • Doncaster - Peterborough: Journeys will now require a change at Lincoln

  • Lincoln - Peterborough: On weekdays, customers will benefit from one additional service in each direction, removing the current long gap in the morning and offering a much more practical option for those connecting with rail services at Peterborough - including onwards to Norwich

  • Attenborough: Attenborough will benefit from an all-day hourly service to both Derby and Crewe.

  • Burton Joyce: Will have an hourly service throughout the day on weekdays and Saturdays

  • Carlton: Will receive an hourly Sunday service, increasing from 12 to 28 services. This will also allow direct journeys to the Peak District or the Lincolnshire Coast

  • Crewe: As part of the timetable restructure, connections at Crewe are being strengthened, with better alignment to Avanti West Coast services to the Northwest and Scotland

  • Hykeham: Receives a major uplift in service, with the introduction of two trains per hour on weekdays and Saturdays

  • Lincoln: Over 2,000 extra seats on East Midlands Railway services to and from Lincoln on a weekday and over 3,000 extra seats on a Saturday

  • Nottingham: Improved connections at Nottingham will further enhance access to destinations such as Norwich and Skegness.

  • Peartree: There will be a reduction in stops at Peartree to allow the wider enhancements to services and connections across the network.

  • Radcliffe: Additional stops, with an increase of more than 70% in services throughout the week

  • Spondon: Receives a major uplift in service, with the introduction of regular hourly calls throughout the week – including a Sunday service

New Aurora trains

An exciting new chapter of Intercity travel will begin this December. The first Aurora train from East Midlands Railway’s new £400 million fleet will enter service across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. The state-of-the-art Hitachi Rail built fleet will transform the experience of customers as they travel on the Midland Main Line - providing more seats, modern, spacious interiors, improved air conditioning, free class leading WiFi, plug sockets at every seat and clear customer information screens.

The 33 bi-mode trains will take advantage of the £1.5 billion Midland Main Line upgrade, with the ability to run on electric overhead lines - dramatically cutting carbon emissions by 66 per cent, meaning quieter and greener journeys too.

Once the full fleet of 33 trains is in service, it will deliver a substantial 46 per cent increase in the total number of seats available for customers travelling on the Midland Main Line.
