What to do in Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth is an ancient market town in Ceredigion, Wales. Situated near the Rivers Ystwyth and Reidol, the university town and popular tourist resort forms a cultural link between North and South Wales and is referred to as the unofficial capital of Mid Wales.

It wouldn’t be a visit to Aberystwyth without a trip to the seafront, which is lined with a mix of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Take a walk along the promenade and stop by one of the pubs or cafes along the way, or head to the Cliff Railway for an even better view.

The Cliff Railway is the longest funicular cliff railway in Britain that is run by electricity and can be found on the Northern end of the promenade. Taking the rail is the most relaxing way to take in the sights, as you ascend Constitution Hill. Other attractions to note are the Camera Obscura, a recreation of the Victorian original which was removed in the 1920s and can be found at the top of Constitution Hill. It is one of the largest camera obscuras in the world, treating visitors to views of 1000 square miles of beautiful scenery.

For a bit of history, you need not look far. Positioned at a central location on the seafront are the ruins of Aberystwyth Castle. The Ceredigion Museum is located above Aberystwyth’s Tourist Centre and offers 3 floors of Welsh and local history.
