What to do in Colchester

It is said that this town is the oldest recorded in Britain. Colchester’s Roman ties are visible today, with many sites and ruins still in existence from that period.

The town is full of beautiful historical buildings, with plenty of sights and things to do. Immerse yourself in the history of the town as you explore the town centre, or if you prefer to go further afield, there are plenty of green spaces and scenic trails to stroll or ride around in at your leisure.

There is a plethora of specialist museums to suit different interests, from aviation, toys, and exhibitions containing items of historical importance. Colchester Castle was a former Norman keep and showcases the history of the town from prehistoric times through to the Roman invasion and Medieval period.

If you have kids in tow, or just love animals, Colchester Zoo is a great place to go, with over 270 species of animals spread over 60 acres of greenery and lakes. With plenty of play areas for the young ones to explore, even an area for under-3s, it's a fun and educational experience for all.

Colchester is world-famous for its oysters and they can be found at the fine seafood restaurants in Mersea Island. For those not into seafood, The Batte-Lay Tea Room serves a variety of British staples, from English breakfasts to freshly made sandwiches and quiches. Unwind and maybe even treat yourself to some afternoon tea, served with Wilkin & Sons jam, which has been produced since 1885 in Tiptree.
