What to do in Southend on Sea

Made popular by royalty, this former fishing town is now a playground for young and old.

Known for Adventure Island and its nightlife, there is more to flashing lights and partying in this town. Take a leisurely stroll down the absurdly long pier, relax in some of the green spaces around the town or experience a traditional fishing village by going to Old Leigh.

Adventure Island is the number one free admission amusement park in the UK and is a must when you’re in Southend.

Step away from the glaring lights and carnival noises with a walk down Southend Pier (the world’s longest pier), or take the train if you wish, and grab some refreshments at the end.

Southend Cliff Gardens is only a few minutes from the city centre with great views of the sea and a cliff lift that takes you down to the beach.

It isn’t a trip to the sea if you haven’t sampled the local seafood. There are plenty of places that serve fresh local seafood along the beach but for those who aren’t able to enjoy seafood, there are plenty of cafes, bars, high street eateries and restaurants in a variety of cuisines to sate your appetite.
