Quiet Coaches

Quiet Coaches (also known as Quiet Carriages or Quiet Zones) are mostly found on trains that are travelling longer distances.

If you want to reserve a seat in a Quiet Coach, you will be able to see it as an option, if available, when booking your train tickets. If you want to find it on board a train, it will be clearly signposted.

When you have chosen to sit in a quiet carriage on your journey, we understand it’s usually because you want to sit in peace to work or relax, or because you have a sensitivity to noise. And while total silence is not possible on a train, we do ask that passengers please follow these general rules:

• No phone calls

If you need to make a call, please step into the vestibule or another carriage

• Put your devices on silent

Set phones and laptops to silent mode for ringing, notification sounds, keypad noises etc.

• Wear headphones

If you are listening to music, watching videos, or playing games, put your headphones on and keep the volume low enough that it doesn’t disturb anyone else

• Keep your conversations quiet

If you talk to a travelling companion, please keep it brief and hushed. Chatting in large groups, loud talking and laughing should be avoided

• Be considerate of fellow passengers

If you aren’t able to follow the rules of the Quiet Coach, please find an alternative seat

Not all train companies offer Quiet Coaches, and those that do may have different rules. Please check with the train company for your journey.

If you have a problem with noise in a quiet carriage, you should find the train manager and they will be able to assist you.
