Disruption is expected until 12:30.

Customer advice:

If you are travelling between Horsham and Barnham, you can travel on your normal route, but you will need to allow at least an additional 30 minutes to complete your journey.

Please talk to station staff, look at the information boards or check your journey planner for the most recent information.

How are services changing?

While this disruption is ongoing, Southern will be making the following changes to services:

Trains that normally run between London Victoria to Bognor Regis / Portsmouth will divide / couple at Barnham instead of Horsham.

This should not affect your journey but for safety reasons its important to be aware of.

The following stations will not be served by Southern services until further notice:

  • Portsmouth Harbour

  • Portsmouth & Southsea

If you are travelling to or from these stations:

You will need to use your ticket on South Western Railway. This will take up to an additional 15 minutes to complete your journey.

Can you use your ticket with another operator?

You can travel on the following services at no additional cost:

  • Alternative Southern services between Barnham and Fratton

  • South Western Railway services between Havant and Portsmouth Harbour

Planning your journey:

You can use live departure boards, a live map of the network and the alternative route guide to help you.

If you're travelling in the London area, you can plan journeys on alternative routes by using the TfL Journey Planner.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

Southern have been told about a road vehicle striking the level crossing barriers near Billingshurst.

The level crossing barriers are believed to have been damaged and Network Rail will need to attend to check them.

Barriers contain a number of parts which can be sensitive to being struck by vehicles. They are required to have various different parts, such as red warning lights, and often have metal "skirts" which prevent children and objects from bypassing the barriers.

Also, to reduce the impact of collisions, barriers are often fitted with bolts which will take the force of the impact, and allow the barriers to detach. This means staff may need to reposition the barriers before the crossing can be used normally.

Until the level crossing is assessed, trains may not be able to run through the area. If they can run, this will need to happen at reduced speeds, and only once the track has been confirmed to be clear.

Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
