Description

A trespasser on the railway in the Clapham Junction area earlier today has caused disruption to journeys through this station. Trains may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 80 minutes or revised whilst service recovers.

Major disruption is expected until 20:00.

Gatwick Express services are currently suspended.

Please note, South Western Railway are no longer affected by this disruption.

Gatwick Express, Southern, Thameslink customer advice:

All lines are open, however, significant delays, cancellations, and ad-hoc alterations will affect Southern services that run via Clapham Junction until further notice. Gatwick Express is temporarily suspended, and you should allow at least 80 minutes additional time to complete your journey.

For journeys via London Victoria, you are strongly advised to travel via London Bridge or London Waterloo instead. If you are travelling to Gatwick Airport, you should allow plenty of extra time.

What are the changes to Southern services?

The following service changes will apply until further notice. Further changes to Southern services are expected. Where possible, your train may finish or start earlier at different locations, so please check station information screens and journey planning apps before you board.

London Victoria and Eastbourne / Ore services will run once per hour, to and from East Croydon only - You can use alternative Southern services between London Victoria, London Bridge and East Croydon.

Gatwick Express is suspended - You can use alternative Thameslink services from Brighton towards London. Change at East Croydon for a limited Southern services towards London Victoria.

London Victoria to Epsom services are suspended - You can use alternative services towards Epsom from London Bridge.

London Victoria to Reigate services are suspended - You can use alternative Southern or Thameslink services to Redhill, changing for Great Western Railway services from Redhill to Reigate.

London Victoria to London Bridge services are suspended - Please use alternative Southern and Thameslink services, or London buses.

East Croydon to Watford Junction services are suspended - You can use London Overground services between London Euston and Watford Junction.

Is Thameslink affected?

Thameslink services which run between central London and Sutton will be subject to delays and alterations. All services along this route will run via Mitcham Junction in the direction of Sutton, and via Wimbledon in the direction of central London.

What are my alternative travel options?

Your ticket will be accepted on Thameslink services for London Bridge, and on South Western Railway services London Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon. You can use London Underground to travel between these stations and London Victoria, or your destination.

Additionally, for journeys in the South London area, your ticket will be accepted on London Buses as required to complete your journey.

If your train is delayed between stations, please remain where you are and listen to announcements, or speak to staff for further information. Gatwick Express and Southern will get you moving as soon as possible. They aware of your location, and their teams will be doing everything they can to help you continue your journey.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

A trespass incident was reported in the Clapham area earlier this afternoon, and power to the railway lines were switched off. All trains were stopped while emergency services and Network Rail responders dealt with the situation.

All lines are now open, however, disruption will continue until at least later on this evening as trains and crew have become displaced. You will continue to see short notice cancellations and changes to services for a while.

Trespassing on the railway is very dangerous. Trains run all day, every day - whether passenger trains, freight trains or specialist engineering work machines. It's not possible to be sure that you can hear when a train is coming, and in many cases, you won't see a train until it is very close to you.
