Description

Lines have now reopened following fault with the signalling system in the Hampden Park area. However, whilst service recovers, trains running between Eastbourne and Hampden Park may be delayed by up to 15 minutes, cancelled or revised.

Disruption is expected until 14:00.

Customer advice:

A fault with the signalling system earlier today at Hampden Park area meant that a reduced number of services have been running through the area. Services can now be reintroduced, but the following changes have been in place:

  • Services that run between Brighton and Ore will be suspended

  • Services that run between Brighton and Eastbourne will be subject to short notice service changes and cancellations

  • Other services that run through the Hampden Park / Eastbourne area may be subject to delays, as well as short notice service changes

Please check before you travel this morning as you may need to take a different train than planned or change trains en route. Journeys may take around 20 minutes longer as a result so please allow plenty of extra time.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

This part of the network uses axle counters to detect trains by tracking their wheels. If one fails, the system may think a train is still there, preventing others from moving forward.

Drivers must stop at red signals and get verbal permission to proceed at a reduced speed, which can cause significant delays, especially in areas with long track sections.

Faults can be caused by electronic issues or debris. Network Rail is investigating, and we’ll share updates as soon as we have them.
