Description

A fault with the radio system between the driver and the signaller is affecting services on the South England network. Some services may be delayed by up to 90 minutes or cancelled as a result.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

A visual disruption map video is available.

CrossCountry customer advice:

Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on the following services:

  • The two CrossCountry services operating before and after your cancelled service

  • Great Western Railway services between Reading and Basingstoke

  • South Western Railway services between Basingstoke and Bournemouth

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost

Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but Coach B, H and L are unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

Great Western Railway customer advice:

Services between Reading and Basingstoke:

Tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on the following routes:

  • CrossCountry via any reasonable route

  • South Western Railway via any reasonable route

If your train is cancelled, you may travel on either of the two services before, or two services after, your original train. If these are peak services or less flexible, you can still travel with your original ticket, at no extra cost.

If you miss a connection as a result of being delayed, you can use your ticket, at no extra cost, on the next available train.

Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink Customer advice:

If you are travelling this morning, delays and cancellations are expected to Southern services in the Sussex and Wessex routes. Services are unable to run beyond Chichester towards Havant until further notice.

Please carefully check station information screens and listen to announcements before you board. Your overall journey time may take at least an additional 60 minutes, and you may need to change trains or use a different operator to complete your journey.

Service changes:

Where possible the following service changes will apply;

  • Barnham to Bognor Regis services will not run

  • Brighton to Southampton Central services will not run

  • Brighton to Portsmouth & Southsea services will run to and from Chichester only

  • London Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour services will terminate at Horsham or Chichester

  • Horsham to Bognor Regis services are suspended

Please use alternative Southern services, changing at Chichester for Stagecoach 700 between Chichester and Portsmouth City Centre to complete your journey, where possible.

If you're north of Gatwick Airport, it may be faster for you to travel into London and use South Western Railway services from London Waterloo towards Southampton and Portsmouth.

If you're waiting on a train which is delayed between stations:

If your train is delayed between stations, please stay on board and listen for updates. You can also ask staff if you need more information.

For your safety, please don’t leave the train unless instructed. Other trains may still be running, and the tracks can be very dangerous. If the area has an electric third rail, it stays live even during delays and looks just like the other rails.

Can I use my ticket with another operator?

You can travel on the following services at no additional cost:

  • Alternative Southern services between London Victoria, Worthing and Gatwick Airport

  • Alternative Thameslink services between Brighton and London via Gatwick Airport

  • South Western Railway services between London Waterloo and Southampton / Portsmouth

  • London Underground via any reasonable route.

  • Stagecoach route 9 between Arundel, Littlehampton, Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea

  • Stagecoach 700 between Chichester and Portsmouth (City Centre) and between Littlehampton and Bognor Regis

  • Stagecoach route 500 between Chichester, Barnham and Littlehampton

Planning your journey:

You can see a live map of the network. This will show where your journey is likely to be affected.

You can also use the Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink apps to find up-to-date information.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

We've been informed of a problem with the railway's radio system. This links train drivers with the signallers who control the rail traffic on each route.
