Engineering work is taking place between Cheddington and Milton Keynes Central, with 2 out of 4 lines being closed. This has resulted in the line capacity being severely reduced.  

London Northwestern Railway:

Throughout the weekend, trains will run to a reduced timetable and will be retimed.

Additionally on Sunday until 08:30, buses will replace trains between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Northampton. 


Before 11:15 on Sunday, no trains will run between East Croydon / Clapham Junction and Watford Junction / Milton Keynes.

Customers can use alternative London Northwestern Railway services to / from London Euston, London Underground services between London Euston and London Victoria and Southern services to / from London Victoria.

Virgin Trains:

Throughout the weekend the following alterations will apply:

  • Trains will be reduced to one train per hour on most routes.
  • Trains between London Euston and Holyhead will run between Crewe and Holyhead only.
  • Trains between London Euston and Chester will not run. 
  • On Sunday only, 2 trains per hour will run between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe and Wilmslow.

Additional advice for Virgin Trains customers

As a result of this reduced capacity, events taking place on the route and engineering works on other routes increasing the number of customers using the West Coast Main Line, services are likely to be busy across the bank holiday weekend. Virgin Trains strongly recommend that customers planning to travel make a reservation.

On Saturday and Sunday, the following additional trains will run:


  • 09:39 Crewe to Edinburgh. 
  • 13:52 Edinburgh to London Euston.
  • 16:34 London Euston to Edinburgh. 
  • 20:49 Edinburgh to Preston.


  • 11:30 Crewe to Edinburgh. 
  • 11:52 Edinburgh to London Euston.
  • 15:43 Edinburgh to Crewe.
  • 18:52 Edinburgh to London Euston.
