Early May Bank Holiday Travel Advice

Saturday 2 May

Normal service

No changes to Transport for Wales services have been announced.

Sunday 3 May

No Transport for Wales trains will run between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street

Due to engineering work closing the lines to and from Liverpool Lime Street all day, no Transport for Wales trains will run between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street. Trains will still be running between Chester and Liverpool South Parkway.

You should use alternative train operator services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street.

Until 12:35: No Transport for Wales trains will run between Wolverhampton and Birmingham International

Due to Sunday morning engineering works, until approximately 12:35 no trains will run between Wolverhampton and Birmingham International. You can use your ticket at no extra cost on alternative train and replacement bus services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street.

Monday 4 May - Early May Bank Holiday

Until 10:55: No Transport for Wales trains will run between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street

Due to Monday morning engineering work closing the lines to and from Liverpool Lime Street, until approximately 10:55 no Transport for Wales trains will run between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street. Trains will still be running between Chester and Liverpool South Parkway.

You should use alternative train operator services between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street.

Changes to some late night services to and from Cardiff Central

Due to late night engineering work the following changes to Transport for Wales services will be made:

  • 22:52 Aberdare to Cardiff Central service will divert after Radyr to run via Llandaf. A replacement bus will run from Radyr at 23:45 to Cardiff Central

  • 23:16 Cardiff Central to Maesteg service will not run, and will be replaced by a bus, calling at all stations via Pontyclun

  • 23:20 Cardiff Central to Carmarthen service will be diverted to run via Barry. A replacement bus will run from Cardiff Central to Bridgend via Pontyclun, departing Cardiff Central at 23:00

Minor changes to some train times between Cheltenham Spa / Gloucester and Cardiff Central

Major engineering work will be taking place in the Severn Tunnel between Bristol Parkway and Severn Tunnel Junction / Newport (South Wales). Although this will primarily affect Great Western Railway services to and from South Wales, the times of Transport for Wales services between Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester and Cardiff Central are subject to minor alterations. This is due to long distance trains between London Paddington and Swansea being diverted via Gloucester. Please check your train times on this route prior to travelling.

Sunday 24 May

Changes to services at Cardiff Queen Street

Due to engineering work closing lines at Cardiff Queen Street, the following service changes will be made:

Rhymney / Caerphilly - Barry Island: Buses replace trains between Rhymney / Caerphilly and Cardiff Central.

Radyr - Cardiff Central via Llandaf, Cathays and Cardiff Queen Street: Buses replace trains, with Treherbert and Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Central services diverting between Radyr and Cardiff Central via Fairwater (City line).

Penarth - Coryton: Services from Penarth to Coryton will terminate at Cardiff Central, with ticket acceptance in place with Cardiff Bus on on routes 21, 23 and 27.

Cardiff Bay Line: All day ticket acceptance will be in place with Cardiff Bus on route 6, with an additional 1 bus per hour running from Radyr to Cardiff Bay via Llandaf, Cathays and Cardiff Queen Street to preserve customer journey options.

Late night service changes between Cardiff Central and Carmarthen

Due to late night engineering work, the following service changes will be made on Monday night:

22:26 Cardiff Central to Carmarthen service will divert via Swansea, calling additionally at Neath and departing Swansea at 23:46.

23:20 Cardiff Central to Carmarthen service will terminate at Swansea with an onward replacement bus being provided calling at all stations to Carmarthen.

Late night service changes between Shrewsbury and Crewe

Due to late night engineering work between Shrewsbury and Crewe, the following service changes will be made:

21:26 Cardiff Central to Chester service will run direct from Shrewsbury to Crewe, with an additional call at Wrexham General. A rail replacement bus will connect out of the service to allow customers to travel onwards to Crewe via Nantwich, with an additional 00:20 (Tue) Crewe to Chester train service running to maintain last connections from Crewe to Chester.

22:21 Cardiff Central to Crewe service will divert via Chester, with a connecting rail replacement bus operating from Shrewsbury to Crewe.

22:32 Manchester Piccadilly to Shrewsbury service will terminate at Crewe with onward rail replacement buses being provided towards Shrewsbury.
