Travel by train to The Championships, Wimbledon – 1 of the 4 Grand Slam tennis tournaments in the world, held annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in south London

Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world. The only Slam contested on grass continues to honour many long-standing traditions, including a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream, and royal patronage.

The Championships take place at Wimbledon in south London. As well as the Gentlemens and Ladies singles tournaments, which attract the very best tennis players in the world, there are also doubles, juniors and wheelchair tournaments with the best players competing. The Championships saw over 548,000 spectators come through the gates across the fortnight in 2025, with a similar number expected this year. So why not take the train to south London for this iconic event.

You can use the train to travel to and from The Championships, Wimbledon

The Championships take place at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, south London.

If you live south-west of London, you may have a train that will take you direct to the venue. Otherwise, travel by train to the station where your train terminates in central London.

Then make your way, using London's extensive public transport network, to the venue.

Which railway station should I travel to for The Championships, Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the nearest National rail station to the event and has step-free access.

South Western Railway operate trains on numerous routes between London Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction and many locations south-west of London which call at Wimbledon. Also Thameslink trains from London St Pancras International and London Blackfriars call at Wimbledon.

If you're travelling from other parts of the country, when you get off the train in central London, make your way using London's comprehensive public transport network to Wimbledon station. You can use London Underground and the above mentioned National Rail routes to get from your London terminus station.

When you get to Wimbledon station, it's an approximately 20 minute walk from the station to the venue. As an alternative, there's a dedicated Championships bus service which runs from Wimbledon station to the Grounds. As a guide, in 2025 fares were £4 for a single journey and £6.50 for a return. Return buses leave the venue from Car Park 1 on Somerset Road.

Public transport on London Underground's District line will also get you to the venue. The step-free District line station at Southfields is a 15 minute walk to the Grounds, and Wimbledon Park is 25 minutes walk away. The Transport for London journey planner can be used to plan your journey on the District line.

Will the trains to and from London be busy?

Trains go to central London from all parts of the country, and can be expected to be busy at peak times.

National Rail and London Underground trains that call at Wimbledon will be especially busy for much of the day. However, South Western Railway services only take approximately 16 minutes to travel between London Waterloo and Wimbledon.

What tickets do I need to buy?

Train tickets:

You’ll need to buy train tickets to make your train journey from your local station. To get to and from the event, consider buying a through ticket to the National Rail station at Wimbledon. The National Rail Journey Planner will show your journey options and you can also compare the available ticket prices.

Alternatively, you could buy a ticket to your London terminus station, and use contactless payment to complete your journey across London to the event using trains and the London Underground. More details on how to do this can be found on the Transport for London website.

Event ticket:

As Wimbledon is a bucket list event for many, the demand for tickets is very high. So the Wimbledon Public Ballot was introduced for obtaining tickets to The Championships. Unfortunately the Wimbledon Public Ballot for The Championships 2026 is now closed.

However, all is not lost if you don't already have a ticket. At Wimbledon you can buy tickets on the day of play. Each day The Queue forms to buy either one of the limited Show Court tickets available, or a Grounds ticket. Tickets are sold to those queuing, one ticket per person, until the Grounds capacity is reached. Once this is reached entry may only be possible as people leave the Grounds for the day - so get in The Queue as early as possible to get the best possible chance of entry.
