Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, lay the ruins of the Gothic Whitby Abbey that inspired Bram Stoker with the script for “Dracula”. Nearby attractions include: Church of St. Mary, The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, the house where he lived. West of town is West Cliff Beach, characterised by colourful wooden beach huts displayed along Whitby golden sandy beach.

Trains to Whitby travel along The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, passing through the Esk Valley and the villages of Goathland and Castleton before arriving a short distance from harbor. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is a heritage railway running through the North York Moors National Park. It was first opened in 1836 as a means of opening up trade routes inland from the then important seaport of Whitby. The line now belongs to the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd, it is a significant tourist attraction. Purchase train tickets to Whitby in advance and save up to 40% on your train fare.

Whitby railway station is the terminus of the Esk Valley Line, connecting with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Grosmont. It is also the mainline for NYMR trains during the summer months. The station is situated 35 miles (56 km) south east of Middlesbrough railway station and is operated by Northern Rail services. Four Northern Rail trains per day run the full return service between Middlesbrough and Whitby, offering an extra late‐evening return service running on Fridays in the summer period. The first train service of the day from Whitby arrives in Middlesbrough at 10:15 am, it is therefore not suitable for commuters. Since the 3rd April 2007 services from Whitby and Pickering started running along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, these run along the Esk Valley line to Grosmont railway station where they join the NYMR's line. The NYMR offers four services per day, rising to five arrivals and departures during peak holiday periods. Passengers can purchase train tickets to Whitby directly at the departure train station or for to benefit from large discounts are recommended to book their train tickets far in advance and purchase these online.

There is one platform only at Whitby train station which can be accessed via the two entrances, the first one offers step‐free access to the station and it is alongside the shopping centre and car park. The second entrance is via stairs coming from the bus depot offices. The ticket office is located between the two entrances on the outside of the station, it is run by NYMR, which is in charge of ticket sales for both National rail and NYMR railway services.

Whitby train station offers Wi‐Fi service and a café to travellers, it is located next to the shopping centre where toilets can also be found. There is a cycle rack at the front entrance.
